Okay, I got my Phase Pistol and Communicator and I have to say that I am very impressed with the attention do detail! I'd like to know what in God's name was that guy talking about with Playmates attention detail (or lack there of)?! Yeah, if collectors were so happy with Playmates, then why did Paramount drop their license?! The Phase Pistol is a good start. First, the toy is made of HEAVY plastic and has incredible detail. Second, the housing (which by the way, on mine closes fine.) opens to reveal a removable battery cell (I don't recall Playmates doing anything of the sort!). Also included with the Phase Pistol is the Communicator. I will say they could have done a little better on this one (i.e. the screen should be blue not green) however, the sound effects are really good (it also uses Scott Bakula's voice not just a random voice). Another thing I'd like to mention is that the molds for these were cast DIRECTLY from the studio props (Paramount was so pleased with the detail that they are actually thinking of using them for "long shots" on the show!) I'd recommend these to ANY Star Trek fan!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Own a piece of the show, March 8, 2003

I think this is probably one of the best prop replica/toys ever made. Since it's actually made from the same molds as the real props used on Enterprise, you know that this is what Scott Bakula has strapped to his hip and not an over or undersized replica. Only quibble I have is that it does feel a tad light, but other than that it's great. The communicator while feeling a little "toy-ish" is still kinda neat with the nice BRIGHT green display. Green or blue... doesn't matter really, it's bright and has a nice sound. The aforementioned orange cap on the tip, while kinda cheesy, not really THAT bad. If it bothers you, then get some duct tape or buy a ... bottle of grey or silver model paint. I just consider it a "refit" lol...

I like the fact that it uses button batteries, not as heavy as some of Playmate's toys and the fact that the phase pistol has the power cell which also acts like a key for the gun. If it's out, the pistol won't make noise. (Good if you've got a little kid around and don't want them to drain the battery!) Also helps kinda make it feel like the real thing, nice light up powercell that you can take out.

The communicator has a very good quality soundchip. Wish it said more and maybe had a movable button (that round one would be nice as a rocker) but, all in all, it's neat. I think if you bought this, you wouldn't regret it, and is a heckuva lot cheaper than buying a prop replica or something. And if you're a collector, ordering from Amazon will almost assue you of a mint/near mint condition box that hasn't been played with or had price tags applied.

So go and blast some Suliban and tell Archer you love this set!

Go to your local Fantasy Gaming store, and get two jars; one will be called "Smelly Primer", the other is "Mithril Silver". Get a VERY small-bristled brush to apply primer first, then MS after it dries.

Result? A dead-on-PERFECT replica of the Phase Pistol; just brush on LIGHTLY around the orange tip.

The Phase Pistol is pretty cool, especially the power cell which lights up when inserted. It has a red tip on it though, which I guess is required? Quality is good, not great though. The communicator has authentic nice chirp and pops open, but is really cheap looking and flimsy. Light on it is OK cool. Hope that helps.

I recently received the long awaited Star Trek items created by the new manufacturer " Art Asylum ". My feelings are mixed. Art Asylum did a wonderful job on the ship and figures ( although smaller than the Playmate Series ). But the " Phase Pistol & Communicator " are a BIG disappointment. The Pistol and Communicator look as though they're not made by the same company. They are both bland colorless shapes. Really boring. Don't make the mistake of thinking the pistol and communicator look anything like the photos they show on the web page. The web page photo shows a pistol & communicator with dynamic color. In reality, they are both dull gray plastic parts with a black pistol grip. And let me not forget the "PINK" tip on the pistol. Which is a bad color choice for any weapon. Unless you wanted it to go with your Barbie doll collection

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Feel, Good Weight, Communicator of Lower Quality, October 17, 2003

The phaser and communicator have a great feel to them with the matte finishing and are weighted quite well. The weight alone makes them feel quite substantial and gives the feeling of a higher quality replica. However, as others have noted, the communicator may not be constructed with the best quality control. On mine, the LED that powers the lighted display does not work. Since LEDs last for quite a long time, I can only assume there is a defect in the circuit board. Opening it up revealed no disconnected wires. Sound on communicator is nice.

The phaser, on the other hand, feels great. The power cell is a nice feature, and the unit emits a loud enough phaser sound. I can't really hear the difference between the two sounds (stun and kill). Either my unit or ears are malfunctioning.

User replaceable batteries included (6 cell types - 3 in each if I'm not mistaken). I wish it had some sort of belt attachment to make it easier to wear the items. Don't forget your "authenticity" coin in the packaging. Given its location, I'm guessing many throw it out with the package.

... If everythig worked as described, I would have given it 5 stars.

The toys is very much like what you see on TV, however it still looks like a toy more so than a phaser.

Understanding these things are designed for kids as toys, the majority of those who will buy this will be young adults and adults as fans of props and Star Trek. I like the look as far as the mold goes, but the paint could have been more realistic.

They seem scaled down a little and I wish they had more functions. Although the phaser has a clever power cell feature, the communicator should have had more phrases.

What do you think? It's still a good Star Trek collectors Item for me. (12-6-02)

I liked this model phaser alot! The problem I had was the fact that even with the power cell out of the phaser it would shoot, and with it in it wouldn't light up! The communicator is also fun but when I would press the button to open it the cover would flip off of the flippy thing. The phaser is not gold, on the back of the box it has everything as silver and the handle is black. The gun is really silver and has the black handle. Something that was annoying for me was the orange safety tip. The box says that " Orange Safety tip is not Starfleet issue." and " It was made to meet the requirments of 21st century rules." Yeah, what kinda cop would see a kid playing with something that clearly does not look like a gun and try to arrest him.?!?! The communicator is not blue. It is green, and when you hold the button down for a second and you can hear Capt. Archer say "Archer to bording party, come in." Kinda cheesy but still alot of fun! Now, I usually scold people who only pick out the bad stuff in the object being bought.
So, here I go. The phaser is pretty realistic and has 2 different sound effects. It was the Stun and Kill sound effects. The communicator is lots of fun! Even with one sound effect, I might like it better than the phaser! It makes you feel like you are actually on the Enterprise crew for some strange reason. The phaser and the communicator are a great buy together. Just be on the look out for the deffects that I mentioned to you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Art Asylum has done very well., September 26, 2002

Art Asylum's initial releases under the Star Trek license are excellent pieces, be they for the collector or for play.

The phase pistol is a solid start. The heavy plastic is durable and well-tooled. The added feature of opening to reveal a "power cell" is also a nice touch. The cell lights up when you replace it in it's chamber until you close the cover. Unfortunately, the silvertone barrel shown in the image on this page has been replaced by a more toy-like clear red plastic barrel. They pistol is still very well done.

The communicator is also well-built with a nice clear sound chip and basic lighting effect. The black lacquer seems a bit too shiny, but that seems to be the only issue I have with it. As an added bonus, the voice you hear on the sound chip is that of Scott Bakula, not just a random voice.

All in all, a quality start for the new series of collectibles.

I am rather impressed with this toy. I have purchased a number of other "toy props" in the past. I have a few phasers, a Klingon knife, a tricorder, and a couple of communicators, but this phaser/communicator combo from Art Asylum is really very nice. The sculpting is adequate on both items, but what makes these special is the use of light. The communicator is a simple device with a sound chip, but the lighted screen is a nice touch. The classic communicator with the recorder in it was nicely done, and is better than this communicator by far, but still, this is a nice rendition. The phaser has a light at the end when you pull the trigger, as expected, but it was a pleasant surprise to plug in the toy power cell and have it light up! That was really nice. I don't like the orange tip on the gun, but that can't be helped. I'm going to paint mine. I like the fact that the instruction booklet mentions the orange tip, and comments that it isn't "Starfleet issue". Overall, this is a very nice toy for [the money].
