3.0 out of 5 stars most excellent, playable , at times frustrating, rewarding with experience & a patch, June 2, 2006
This review is from: Star Trek Fleet Academy C/Dos/Ww (CD-ROM)
runs on Win98. Fun to Play! Choose from 3 ships to start [more weapons but more difficult], Stunning cinematic cut scenes, appearances by Kirk and Sulu [who came out as being gay last year] and Checkov [if you buy and install the add-on game missions], excellent integration into game play. God plot, and plots within plots, and full of surprises, and of course, some Klingons. You have the Conn, a handsome dashing cadet in in training who is reminiscent of a young Captain Decker from Star Trek the Motion Picture, ... but the game takes place after STII or III. There is also a stunning view of a visual creation of his bedroom, among others, where he writes in his log and you hear his entry. It is like playing the real episodes. You can go any speed 0 to 9 when in space or a full stop, while in the simulator on bridge with your crew.
It alternates between the ship viewscreen [i don't know where they got some of the space battle pics from for some of these other versions of the game for sale on here, because it is not in 3rd person, it is mostly in 1st-person from tyhe captain's chair, your player (in training)-- at least maybe i haven't figured out how yet?] and 3rd person cinematic pauses at the academy where you have to choose the character's response. There is also intrigue when a crew person gets news from home, scenes from the academy lounge with a bar and a scene where cadets are watching the latest breaking news updates. Stunning. Unexpected happenings. You don't want to quit playing. It lets you switch while onboard the ship's bridge between stations: either the main forward viewscreen from your captain's chair, with a view of the backs of your helmsman and navigator, to a view of any of each of the other stations around you with a simple arrow left or right, while the voice of your Andorian female comm officer, helmsman, and Vulcan 1st officer chime -in with updates. Good musical score. I cringe, beacuse when i posted really good reviews for games before, their prices shot right up really high, where they were cheap before.
There is also an add-on out there, but it can take somewhat longer for some boring[?] planetary cataloguing missions in the add-on by Gamefest, the other Mfr., sold in its 5-cd set, the disk called Checkov's Lost Missions. How in the world they ever fit all the CDs onto one, i have no idea (it also includes the stand alone planetary battle game based on a common engine, and 2 cd's of starfleet battles 1 and 2, --popular but NOT on my fav.list; SFB is very different to play compared to these SFA games which are fun, in my book]. You have the Conn.
The 1st 2 scenes are some very-much-needed target practice. Only takes a little time to learn to play.Farely intuitve. Make sure you know whether you are odering the single DVD edition by Interplay (now out of business, unfortuneatly-- i sooo wish someone would finish the game they began work on in Dec. 1997 called Secret of Vulcan Fury. This intro demo game movie alone is worth buying SFA) or the 5 CR-ROM set from Interplay (with a free andorian pewter-steel figurine) or the same from this other company here. It may have been made % released on a floppy-A set? Make sure install the patch so you can save games! That way you don't have to replay scenes 1 AND 2 o over and over , until you pass the the 1st plaentary, deep-space mission (scene 3):
How to get past 3rd scene/mission 2 (scene 2 of mission 2): You must not let the pirate shuttle/ship escape that stole a radioactive buoy, in the 2nd part of scene 3, after launching a replacement planetary buoy, so accelerate to high speed as you are warping into the next system where the freighter escaped to and coming out of warp with him in front of you, [after launching your buoy before warping out-system in pursuit], and rush at the planet where the pirate mordachai is releasing the buoy. You can accelerate some without losing the buoy in-tow from your tractor beam field. It doesn't matter if the buoy is destoyed, since SF command will mistakenly tell you to anyway-- it might even crash into your shields, so i would go to yellow alert 1st. But then you must go to red alert after you have the buoy and Immediately goto red alert AND set weapons to "Disabling" mode [no NOT use photons], do NOT let him escape too far off of your radar screen or you will lose the scenario and have to restart, and do not get too close to him or he will destroy or cripple you. As game cheat sites will tell you, you must set your repair priorities higher on warp drive and shields, etc. He will try to destroy your warp cnacelles. Back off a little while you repair. Just not too far.
Most other ST games that might not/ may not/ or have some difficulties installing on 98 will on WinMe. It says is should work on WinMe too. As, a side-note,DS9 the Fallen, for some reason , installs grea on Win98 but not on Me.
