Trek As Only Peter David Can Do It,
By
This review is from: Star Trek: New Frontier: Treason (Star Trek: New Frontier (Unnumbered)) (Paperback)
We've all waited a long time for the next New Frontier novel and Peter David has delivered something worth waiting for. We pick up with the crew of the Excalibur and Prime Minister Robin Lefler around nine months after the events of the New Frontier graphic novel (which is a must read before this book), so as you can probably imagine the tale starts off with the birth of the heir of the late Si Cwan.
I won't say anymore on the plot itself except that there are some definite and unexpected twists and the reader would be well advised to follow closely down to the last sentence. Character development continues, as usual with David's novels. The books is split between the perspectives of Soleta, Selar, Calhoun, Mueller and Shelby, though the latter only for a short while. Treason is not a jumping on point for new readers, but rather the continuation of storylines we've all been following closely. It definitely leaves the reader wanting more and I hope we don't have to wait as long for the next installment.

Good, not great.,

This review is from: Star Trek: New Frontier: Treason (Star Trek: New Frontier (Unnumbered)) (Paperback)
This book is a good read, a perfectly acceptable addition to the New Frontier series; if you've read all of the others prior to this, you'll probably want to read this one. If you haven't read to this point in the series, you'll definitely want to start elsewhere; like most of the series, this book does not stand on its own. What is particularly annoying is that apparently, Peter David branched out into graphic novels, and the entry into the series prior to this one is said graphic novel. So merely having read all of the REAL books in the series isn't sufficient; in order to be up on what's going on coming into this book, you need to have read the graphic novel. This is annoying for two reasons: one, I don't read comic books any more, and "graphic novel" is just a euphemism for "overpriced comic book". Two, in the list of "New Frontier Novels by Peter David, In Chronological order" that appears at the beginning of this book, the Graphic Novel is not listed, so there was no way of knowing that one was missing part of the lead-in by going directly from "Missing In Action" to this one. It didn't leave me TOO lost; I was more or less able to follow what was happening, but I did have the definite impression that I was missing something. A previous reviewer's comment explained what had happened to me.
I'm giving this book three stars because it was too well-written for me to feel comfortable giving it less, and I've always enjoyed Peter David's writing, and most of the characters and plots in this series. But if we're going to be left missing some of the story if we don't buy graphic novels, I think I'm going to have to give up on this series.

Horrible conversion to Kindle,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Star Trek: New Frontier: Treason (Star Trek: New Frontier (Unnumbered)) (Kindle Edition)
I just had to post a review as I am having similar problems with other Star Trek novels. The conversion to Kindle has left them nearly unreadable. In fact, this novel I quit on before I finished the chapter when I spent to much time understanding what was being said. For example, she turns into s'he every time it is in the text. It is miserable and I am really disappointed. Amazon and the publisher both should ensure that the conversion is done better and should fix all the past books already out there. It seriously takes away from the reading experience.

I find that Peter David books are always worth the wait. Treason is an outstanding Star Trek novel. Filled with great characters, humor and surprises. All your favorites are back with a whole new adventure. If you have been looking for the fun and adventure in your Star Trek reading as I have, this is the book to get.

Losing direction,

When you look back on Peter David's novels, he really does have an impressive track record, especially with the New Frontier series. Somewhere around the Restoration book, David lost the cohesion of the crew and the direction began to flounder.
His latest venture, Treason, feels especially directionless. It's just a bunch of stuff that happens. David used to bring different threads from the Star Trek universe together and he used to be brilliant with that. I feel like he's still trying to tie everything together, but utterly without inspiration. If you're looking for another David homerun, try elsewhere. Try David Mack's new Destiny trilogy. David Mack has taken Peter David's place as the king of Trek.

Peter David Keeps The New Frontier Train Rolling,
By
This review is from: Star Trek: New Frontier: Treason (Star Trek: New Frontier (Unnumbered)) (Paperback)
If you're a fan of this series of books, and you really care about the characters then you'll like this book. This story picks up pretty much right after the comic mini series that came out last year, but isn't totally necessary to get what's going on here. I won't go into too much detail because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story. Throughout the book Mr. David foreshadows his next book in this series which I'm looking forward to. I recommend this book.

I cannot wait until the next New Frontier book comes out. I have enjoyed each and every one of them and this one is no different. I truly enjoy the world that Peter David has created. I love the characters, their interctions, and their evolution.

Excellent, as usual for Peter Davids' books,

I just finished reading this book, one of the last I have in paperback form (I'm going e-books now). I've read all of the previous books in the New Frontier series and loved them. This one was no exception. A familiar, reocurring character apparently dies in the course of this story(you'll have to read it for yourself to find out who). I say 'apparently' because you just never know. Many a character in the Star Trek world who apparently died, has managed to come back in one way or another. So we'll see what Peter David has in store for us.
His books are entertaining, humorous, and exciting. He has a balanced mixture of dialogue and narrative, which I like. I just ordered the next book, which is a continuation of the storyline developed in this novel. It will be great reading during my upcoming vacation.

No spoilers. This is the continuing adventures of the Excaliber and her crew. This novel ends some plotlines and starts some more. Treason is very will written, easy to read, supensful and funny. All of Peter David's Star Trek books are really good there are plenty "guest staring apperences" from the rest of the Star Trek Universe. Treason is not the book to read if you want to start this series. I would start at the begining and read thru them all.
The only complaint I have is that the books are not coming out fast enough. If your a fan of Star Trek you will enjoy this series!

Peter David cannot write these quickly enough,
By
This review is from: Star Trek: New Frontier: Treason (Star Trek: New Frontier (Unnumbered)) (Paperback)
I definitely cannot get enough of Peter David's Star Trek, especially his New Frontier series. Peter has a gift for characterization and plot twists that seems to shine when he writes about the characters that populate the Excalibur.
Treason is no exception. The plot centers around the birth of the deceased Cwansi and Lefler's child and Selar's agony over her son's condition. With some great cameos and a tie in with the recent IDW mini-series, Treason was a fun read. The last page was a doozy. When is the next one coming out? |
