Unbeknownst to the Enterprise crew, Picard (Patrick Stewart) is kidnapped by an alien energy beam and replaced with an exact replica. The real captain finds himself trapped in a room with three other hostages: Tholl (Stephen Markel), a peace-loving Mizarian; Haro (Joycelyn O'Brien), an Angolian and a Starfleet Academy cadet; and Esoqq (Reiner Schone), a member of the beast-like Chainoth race.

While this duplicate arouses the suspicions of the crew with his odd behavior, Picard suspects that he and his fellow prisoners are guinea pigs in some unknown experiment-and that their captor is among them.

This episode, in which Picard finds himself a captor with a group of other humanoids he has never met before, is classic in its slow revelation of what is really going on, and thoroughly enjoyable in its suspense and mounting excitement.
