While the Enterprise participates in the testing of a new propulsion method called a soliton wave, Worf (Michael Dorn) receives an unexpected visit from his human adoptive mother (Georgia Brown) and his son Alexander. Surprise turns to shock, however, when the boy informs his father that he plans to live on the ship permanently.

As Worf struggles with his new parental duties - Alexander has a tendency to lie and misbehave - the crew discovers the wave test has gone awry and is threatening a nearby colony. They work frantically to fix the problem, but the Enterprise is badly damaged and Alexander is trapped in one of the bio-labs where a fire has begun. Can Worf find his son in time?
