The easiest way to catch up on your Klingon history, December 7, 2000
This review is from: Star Trek: The Next Generation - Worf: Return to Grace Collection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In the original conception of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, Data was to have been the Spock to Picard's Kirk. Through his emotionless eyes we were to have gained a window back onto ourselves, and thereby found the show's human heart. But when Denise Crosby somewhat unexpectedly quit the show, the as-yet unused character of Worf was given more to do. Ultimately, Data became exactly the sort of charming emotional cripple he was meant to be, but it was really Worf who had the more compelling perspective on the human condition.
What made the Spock character work was not just that he was trying to understand the humanity, but that he was basically in opposition to it. Data is almost boringly sycophantic by comparison. He wants to be a human and so accepts humanity as his uncritiqued paradigm. Worf, by contrast, is in search of his Klingon-ness (having been raised on Earth) and struggles, like Spock, to balance his human legacy against his non-human nature. Like Spock, his journey takes us through the unfamiliar culture of another race, but it never fails to comment upon the nature of humanity, if largely by contrast.
To be sure, more of Worf's character would be played out on DEEP SPACE NINE than here, but most of what's at the Lt. Commander's core is found in this boxed set. The four episodes on offer here take us through the major story arc that brought Worf to light. Comprised of "Sins of the Father", "Reunion" and the two-parter "Redemption", the RETURN TO GRACE package chronicles the history of Worf's sometimes bitter relationship with the Klingon homeworld, and how he and his brother ultimately play the role of kingmaker in a bloody civil war. Along the way, we are given a kind of sequel to the justifiably popular "Yesterday's Enterprise". "Redemption", in fact, is important to the series not just for its further revelation of Worf's character, but also because it gives Denise Crosby a clever way back into the series. In fact, "Redemption" is an absolutely indispensible episode, because its plot would continue to be referenced in the Star Trek universe as late as the last season of DS9.
While I don't think that this boxed set can be seen as the definitive collection of Worf's best episodes, it would be hard to really understand him without going here first. Worf would make more contributions to the Star Trek universe with his future relationship to his son, his romantic involvement with Deanna Troi and the various Dax characters, and with his general quest to bring order to Klingon society in the wake of the crippling destruction of the Klingon moon depicted in STAR TREK VI. But this is the storyline that assured Michael Dorn the opportunity to appear in more episodes of Star Trek than any other actor.

Buy it - the bonus figure is worth the price of the set, October 26, 2008

Some good episodes even if they are on VHS tape. However if the set is new and sealed, the bonus figure from playmates toys is worth the price of the set.
