5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack, December 18, 2003
Dennis McCarthy composed some great music for this great movie. It can't be compared to the earlier Star Trek movie soundtracks, because this movie is much different than the earlier ones. The music does indeed have a lot in common with the music of the series, which is exactly what makes this score so great, because you realize that this is still Star Trek. This score has everything you want, action, excitement(Kirk saves the Day, Outgunned, The Crash), also very touching, calm suites like "Nexus/Christmas Hug". Dennis McCarthy's music is maybe a bit harder to "understand" than that of Goldsmith and co. but the more you listen to it, the more you love it, and it is too bad that he didn't compose music for the later movies, he would have done at least as well as Goldsmith, especially on "Insurrection". All in all, this CD is simply great, not only if you are a star trek fan, I can recommend it to anyone. You really don't want to miss it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Star Trek soundtrack worthy of future Generations!, May 23, 2001
I'll be honest: I bought this soundtrack just for the Generations Overture which, despite the title, actually accompanies the end credits of the film. Dennis McCarthy has done a fabulous job coming up with the Overture's main "alla Marcia" theme; the orchestration is rich and energetic in the best of sci-fi music tradition, the performance flawless, confident, triumphant. The central slow section, apparently a derivative of the music for "The Nexus" [10], is beautiful for its hymning chorus. But best of all, as when I first heard this Overture, is the interpolation of the classic Star Trek fanfare in the final bars, sounding perfect affirmation at the end of the march theme, rising seamlessly over the sea of strings and fluttering woodwind, blazing away victoriously - when the crew of the Enterprise-D left Veridian III, in that final scene on board the majestic USS Farragut, the feeling was wonderfully exultant, only made more satisfying with this powerful Overture.

And that's only track 1! McCarthy's music for the film is well-crafted, full of dramatic sense, and above all, melodic energy. The "Main Title" [2], with its introductory mysterious "alien" timbres, was the perfect foil for the bottle scene (brilliant idea!). "Prisoner Exchange" [6] is sumptiously forebodding; "The Nexus" [10] beautiful yet strange (as it is in the film), "Kirk's Death" poignant, "To Live Forever" nobly resolving into the a hint of the Overture, ending with the fanfare - brilliant again for McCarthy's sense of unity.

The CD also comes with 24 tracks worth of sound effects, but in my opinion still, there are few sounds here better than the pieces I mention above. Let me play the Overture again...

4.0 out of 5 stars This is probably the best star trek cd yet., July 20, 1998
Star Trek: Generations gives you sound clips of parts of the ship which is great for people who want to create the sounds for their windows or mac prompts. The music is outstanding, and I would suggest buying this soundtrack immediately.
