5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack
Dennis McCarthy composed some great music for this great movie. It can't be compared to the earlier Star Trek movie soundtracks, because this movie is much different than the earlier ones. The music does indeed have a lot in common with the music of the series, which is exactly what makes this score so great, because you realize that this is still Star Trek. This score...

3.0 out of 5 stars A bigger budget does not equate better quality
Like Mark Snow of "X-Files" fame, Dennis McCarthy was given a bigger orchestra and more composition time to prepare for the big screen adaptation of the television series. One would think that this would yield a memorable score in the tradition of the film series. Goldsmith, Horner, Rosenman, and Eidelman had contribution greatly to the Star Trek musical saga...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack, December 18, 2003
Dennis McCarthy composed some great music for this great movie. It can't be compared to the earlier Star Trek movie soundtracks, because this movie is much different than the earlier ones. The music does indeed have a lot in common with the music of the series, which is exactly what makes this score so great, because you realize that this is still Star Trek. This score has everything you want, action, excitement(Kirk saves the Day, Outgunned, The Crash), also very touching, calm suites like "Nexus/Christmas Hug". Dennis McCarthy's music is maybe a bit harder to "understand" than that of Goldsmith and co. but the more you listen to it, the more you love it, and it is too bad that he didn't compose music for the later movies, he would have done at least as well as Goldsmith, especially on "Insurrection". All in all, this CD is simply great, not only if you are a star trek fan, I can recommend it to anyone. You really don't want to miss it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Star Trek soundtrack worthy of future Generations!, May 23, 2001
I'll be honest: I bought this soundtrack just for the Generations Overture which, despite the title, actually accompanies the end credits of the film. Dennis McCarthy has done a fabulous job coming up with the Overture's main "alla Marcia" theme; the orchestration is rich and energetic in the best of sci-fi music tradition, the performance flawless, confident, triumphant. The central slow section, apparently a derivative of the music for "The Nexus" [10], is beautiful for its hymning chorus. But best of all, as when I first heard this Overture, is the interpolation of the classic Star Trek fanfare in the final bars, sounding perfect affirmation at the end of the march theme, rising seamlessly over the sea of strings and fluttering woodwind, blazing away victoriously - when the crew of the Enterprise-D left Veridian III, in that final scene on board the majestic USS Farragut, the feeling was wonderfully exultant, only made more satisfying with this powerful Overture.

And that's only track 1! McCarthy's music for the film is well-crafted, full of dramatic sense, and above all, melodic energy. The "Main Title" [2], with its introductory mysterious "alien" timbres, was the perfect foil for the bottle scene (brilliant idea!). "Prisoner Exchange" [6] is sumptiously forebodding; "The Nexus" [10] beautiful yet strange (as it is in the film), "Kirk's Death" poignant, "To Live Forever" nobly resolving into the a hint of the Overture, ending with the fanfare - brilliant again for McCarthy's sense of unity.

The CD also comes with 24 tracks worth of sound effects, but in my opinion still, there are few sounds here better than the pieces I mention above. Let me play the Overture again...

4.0 out of 5 stars This is probably the best star trek cd yet., July 20, 1998
Star Trek: Generations gives you sound clips of parts of the ship which is great for people who want to create the sounds for their windows or mac prompts. The music is outstanding, and I would suggest buying this soundtrack immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dennis McCarthy's beautiful score is a must-buy., July 19, 2002
Dennis McCarthy will never be grouped with the likes of Goldsmith, Williams, Horner and Silvestri, but he certainly made the most of this opportunity. He had written consistently good music for the seven years of the Next Generation series, but needed to take his product to a higher level to be worthy of a big-budget motion picture. Happily, that is exactly what he did. It is markedly superior to the subsequent "First Contact" score by Goldsmith, which was basically phoned in by him due to a packed schedule (His son wrote much of it).

This is a truly beautiful score, making unique and wonderful use of vocals throughout. No tracks disappoint, but "Outgunned" and "The Nexus/A Christmas Hug" are tracks for the ages, deserving a place with Goldsmith's stellar score for the first Star Trek movie. A must-buy for any serious Trekker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Trek: Generations - Music that moves you, March 24, 2002
By
This was very good music. Having also owned Encounter at Farpoint the music, though in areas sounding a bit familiar, was of extremely high quality. In fact two of the best portions of the music, the fanfare as we see the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B for the first time (part of track 2), and the last portion of Track 15 (the part where USS Farragut and two other ships take the survivors of USS Enterprise back to Earth), were so goood that I turned them into theme music for my Windows desktop. Of course I couldn't play the whole thing or I'd be there forever, but the two snippets were almost half a minute in length each. But they made good startup and shutdown sounds. To me, that's just the ultimate compliment. A very worthwhile CD to own. I just wonder if the Chromium mini-poster included when this CD was released is still available somewhere. I'd like to get another one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Enjoyable, December 31, 1999
Dennis McCarthy's score for the seventh Trek movie is truly wonderful. It's touching, exciting, light - hearted, and dramatic. My personal favorite tracks were #1 -- Generations Overture, #7 -- Outgunned, #10 -- The Nexus/A Christmas Hug, and #15 -- To Live Forever. If you are a fan of the music from any of the modern Trek television shows, you'll most likely enjoy this CD. Oh, the sound effects at the end were a nice bonus. I loved the warp pass - bys, and the crash sequence was really interesting to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!!, February 8, 2001

Now when Dennis McCarthy wrote this, he really knew what he was doing! This is the most enjoyable CD I have! The music is so flowing it feels as though you are really there. The 'main title' (2) is absolutely gorgeous, along with 'The Nexus' (10). The piece of 'Kirk's Death' (14) is so heart-breaking it's enough to make one's eyes water. But this is the ultimate CD that everyone should have. This is just exquisite! Most highly recommended!!!! It is worth it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, Most Impressive, May 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Every time I watch the opening sequence for this film with the Don Perion bottle flying through space, its really well done. The music for that is very well composed. As for the rest of the tracks they are all well orchestrated. I don't have many albums by Dennis McCarthy but some of the pieces in this album are quite striking. MAIN TITLE I like very much & right down to the last track - TO LIVE FOREVER starts off calmly then ends with different tones at the end. As for the OVERTURE piece begins off very good & its brilliant. When I watch films I listen to the music carefully to see if the album is worth buying - I have nearly 87 soundtracks in my Music library, because I like hearing the music over again, whether if its heavy drums / very deep Dramatic music from "KING ARTHUR to LORD OF THE RINGS every soundtrack album is unique - I am a huge MOVIE Buff, but only on ones that appeal to me. I would recommend this album to all STAR TREK fans out there. See what you think of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Star Trek, September 22, 2008
Not the best Star Trek Album but has some great tunes. It seems a little predictable and repediative sometimes though the main theme seems to warm my heart when it kicks in.
