Book Description

July 1998
Star Trek: The Next Generation® is the most popular, longest-running series in science fiction history. Now, after the spectacular worldwide success of Star Trek: First Contact©, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Starship Enterprise™ return to the big screen in a thrilling new adventure that captures all the fun and excitement of Star Trek at its best.

Star Trek: Insurrection reunites the hugely popular crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Jean-Luc Picard, Starfleet's finest officer; Commander William T. Riker, his stalwart first officer; Lieutenant Commander Data, the indispensable android; Commander Deanna Troi, the empathic Betazoid counselor; Lieutenant Commander Worf, the fierce Klingon warrior; Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge, chief of engineering; and Dr. Beverly Crusher, the ship's able medical officer.

Together, they have faced many challenges over the years, but nothing has prepared them for the unexpected crisis that tests both their skills and their convictions.

On an unnamed planet in a distant sector, Starfleet, in an uneasy alliance with a mysterious new alien species of unknown origin, has discovered a secret with astounding implications that could transform the future of the entire Federation. But this secret has a price that may be more than some are willing to pay.

The secret first turns Data against Starfleet, then draws Jean-Luc Picard and the Starship Enterprise into a tense and dangerous situation that has unexpected effects on every member of the crew -- and presents them with an agonizing moral dilemma. Faced with orders he cannot obey and a crisis he cannot ignore, Picard finds himself torn between his conscience and his uniform.

Bestselling author J. M. Dillard has written a powerful and exciting novel based on the major motion picture directed by Jonathan Frakes ("Commander William T. Riker"). Star Trek: Insurrection is sure to delight audiences throughout the world.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

J.M. Dillard is a veteran of Star Trek novelizations, having written them for the last five films. Her latest, Star Trek: Insurrection, finds her in fine form. The film is much lighter in tone than the last Next Generation offering, First Contact, and Dillard captures this relaxed mood well, transferring the humor from screen to page with a sure touch. The plot moves at a good pace as Picard and crew attempt to protect a group of peaceful Ba'ku villagers from the sinister alien Son'a and Starfleet's Admiral Dougherty, who is being less than candid about his mission. The planet has a rejuvenating effect on everyone who lands there, and this is what the Son'a, a dying race, are after. Dillard deepens the complexity of Dougherty's character, and fills in more of the background of the Ba'ku and Son'a peoples than the film had time for. The book diverges slightly from the screen version in places, presumably because Dillard was working from an earlier version of the script, but at least this means that Picard and Anij get to kiss one another! For those who enjoyed the film, this is a good way of fixing it in the memory, and it works as an exciting novel in its own right. --Elizabeth Sourbut, Amazon.co.uk --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars THe Cinema Version is nothing compared to the book, March 5, 1999
By A Customer
The book starts quite boring, but when once you've reached chapter 2-3 it starts to get quite good,

This book has sceens in it that were not in the cinema release version, ie in the library with Riker & Troi, getting thrown out of the library.

I'd like to say, that this book makes the film.

Yes I admit it I didn't quite like the cinema version but the book, well It's very good

J.M. Dillard has with, Star Trek: Insurrection done another great job of novelizing a movie! I always approach novelization's with a little skepticism as far as what's put on page between the scenes on screen. That said, I don't really do that with her work. She captures the spirit of the film perfectly and put's some really good scenes in that we don't see on film. Thank you to the author for another great novelization!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, November 2, 1999
By A Customer
Well, she's done it again. J.M. Dillard has written another brilliant novelisation, and she really dserves credit for it. The characters were portrayed very well, and she kept to the script for the most part, adding in her own parts about the characters, Anjj, the So'na, and Worf. Although her version of the story deviated somewhat from the movie version, this is probably due to the fact she was working with an earlier script, but it didn't change the book much. Personally, I really liked it, but one part in particular was the part involving Worf. In the movie he didn't play a very big role, just normal Worf with the exception of his .... physical troubles. But in the book Dillard wrote about Worf dreaming, and encountering K'Ehleyer, his former lover. I felt this was one of best insights into his character, with his old flame inslting his relationships after(Deanna Troi, Jadzia Dax). Anyway, I really liked that. The relationship between Riker & Deanna was done very well in film and novel, the novel simply putting thoughts beind their feelings, which I thought was good. Anyway, that's my opinion. On one last note, is anyone else slightly concerned TNG movies haven't found a 'focus' yet. I mean, TOS movies had a focus around Mr. Spock's death and return, but TNG has had none of this. I am deeply concerned about this, if anyone else is feel free to email me.
