Insurrection: A Very Good Score for Star Trek but...,
By Chris (Long Beach, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Star Trek Insurrection: Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This soundtrack is great. I think this film has the best intro music for the title than any other Star Trek film. The start was much like Jerry's other Star Trek introductions, but then he twists it into something completely new. AWESOME! The main songs to highlight this soundtrack would be "New Sight" and "The Drones Attack". GREAT ACTION CUES AND MELODY THEMES! This score I listen to all the time. Here's the downside...The album is too short, only 45 min. And, the best song in the film is missing from the album, "The Holoship". Listen to the film when Data walks into the lake and you'll see what I mean. Still, I hope Jerry Goldsmith does the next Trek film due to come out in 2001. He is the greatest composer for the Next Generation, even though Dennis McCarthy did a great score to end the television show. Buy this, also buy Star Trek 1, and First Contact. ST5 has its good moments, buy it if you love his music. Happy listening!

The Most Pastoral Of Jerry Goldsmith's "Star Trek" scores,
By
This review is from: Star Trek Insurrection: Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Thematically Jerry Goldsmith doesn't have much here that is a substantial improvement over his brilliant score for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" or the splendid score for "Star Trek: First Contact". Yet it is unquestionably his most pastoral, with a haunting theme for the peace-loving natives of the planet rescued by the USS Enterprise which sounds Brahmsian, almost Mahlerian, in its outlook. Without question, this is yet another elegant score composed by Jerry Goldsmith, which comes close to the musical heights attained by the first "Star Trek" score, and the scores for "Alien" and "Patton". Both Star Trek fans and cinematic music fans won't be disappointed with this CD.

A Goldsmith Equal to The Motion Picture,
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Trek Insurrection: Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I preferred this music to that in First Contact, and found it much more moving and satisfying. The whole score actually sounds better, due to orchestrations by Alexander Courage. There are far more diverse themes in this score than in First Contact- two themes for the Ba'ku planet, one for Data gone haywire, a special statement for Riker and the Enterprise and the rythmic, menacing piece for the Son'a. The synthesizer tones and sounds also make tracks like "The Riker Maneuver" fast paced and interesting. The 24-bit recording is almost totally noise free, and is best heard on a good system, in open air. The end credits version of the traditional Star Trek march is the definitive orchestration- and Goldsmith lowers the volume of the orchestra on the descending chords so that the brilliant solo trumpet can be heard. All in all, the very best that Goldsmith has to offer.

Goldsmith is the Star Trek king,
By
This review is from: Star Trek Insurrection: Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
After a successful score to Star Trek: First Contact, Jerry Goldsmith returns once again scoring his fourth Star Trek film, Star Trek: Insurrection, which is just as good as First Contact. "Ba'ku Village" opens with Alexander Courage's classic Star Trek fanfare, which segues into Goldsmith's new theme for the film which is a soft melody for strings, harps, and flutes. This theme occurs again in full form in "Children's Story", "The Healing Process", "New Sight", and the grand finale "End Credits". Goldsmith's action music, which is some of the best action music present in film scoring today is also featured. "Not Functioning" is a rip roaring action cue which features punctuating blasts of brass, dynamic strings, and electronic effects that has become a Goldsmith standard in Star Trek. Other great action cues are found in "The Drones Attack", "Riker Maneuver", and "No Threat" which move the score along in a driving fashion. As usual, Goldsmith puts all of the melodies together in "End Credits" to leave you with a positive feeling. A great score overall and one that is worthy of many more sequels.

Very Good Music,

This is a well planned score for Insurrection. I compare it to First Contact. The first track is the best track out of the whole CD. Although the CD used a different version from the movie. Which was kinda of a dissapoinment. But good music.

Goldsmith's best album,
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Trek Insurrection: Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is by far Jerry Goldsmith's best Star Trek composition. This one and First Contact. He really creates a theme for everything, from the Enterprise E to the Son'a. He also has a good touch to add to the Ba'Ku village scene in the very biginning. He also states battle and danger, great album. His recreation of the Star Trek the Motion Picture theme is just remarkable different from The Final Frontier, First Contact, and Insurrection. He has the best tastes for the movie.

Not the definitive movie soundtrack,

While this has some good tracks, it was purchased solely for the Baku village track, which is a delightful piece, and well worth listening to, especially if you're feeling a bit stressed.
I obviously felt it was worth buying for that track alone, so if you liked the film, (which I did enjoy), but maybe can't remember what the music was like, try to borrow a copy to listen to first, before you splash your hard earned cash.

Vey original, a little bit better than First Contact. There are slower songs but also many that get your adrenaline pumping. A very well rounded cd!

Good, but there could be Changes,

The soundtrack to Insurrection was great, but they could have left out the synthasyzer (sp?). The little computer echos during songs 4, 6, some of 7 and a little of 9 were annoying. The soundtrack could have been a 5 star, if it would have only been made by instruments.

I am a sort of Sountrack collector, and own over 40 of them. This cd has got to be one of the top three that I own. The delicate Ba'ku Village combines the sensitivity and innocence of simplified living, while all of the other tracks are just plain awesome. If you like star trek, or just love nice music, get this cd.
