This hardcover collects the John Byrne Star Trek trades "Assignment Earth", "Romulans", "Crew", and "Leonard McCoy: Frontier Doctor". Although Amazon says the page count is 320, there are actually 480 pages in this massive book.

First off, if you're just a fan of Star Trek: TNG or are looking to read some comics featuring more adventures with Kirk and Spock...you might NOT like this. Just a fair warning. Kirk and Spock aren't really in these stories, in fact if you're a casual fan you might not know ANYONE in these stories, except Dr. McCoy, who is only in the last 80 pages or so.

HOWEVER, if you really love Star Trek:TOS episodes and are a fan of John Byrnes art and storytelling, this is a fantastic collection. It dives into side characters that are barely explored in the TV shows and enriches the overall star trek universe.

"Assignment Earth" features special agent Gary Seven from the TOS episode Assignment:Earth. He travels through space and time with his assistant, fixing problems in the time line. This definitely would have made a wonderful spin off series in the 60's.

"Romulans" is crazy political thriller storyline in the star trek universe dealing with political leadership, cloaking technology, and the neutral zone. Klingons, Romulans, and the federation are all on the brink of war, forming shifty alliances with hidden agendas. People who know their Star Trek will be overjoyed to see the Klingons Kor and Koloth in starring roles!

"Crew" is probably my favorite of the story arcs. It features Christopher Pike's unnamed 1st lieutenant from the pilot episode of Star Trek, before she ever serves upon the enterprise. Again...if you only know about Christopher Pike from the new JJ Abrams films...turn back now!

I have read each of these stories separately and in whichever order I bought them but having them in one volume and in the order John Byrne wanted them in allowed me to see how he meant for them to weave together.

I enjoyed each of the stories and each series has a different tone. You can tell John Byrne has a real love for Star Trek.

And I, for one, appreciate it.

John Byrne is one of my favorite comic book artist. I wanted to catch the rest of Byrne's Trek stories for IDW as I enjoyed Star Trek Crew and Leonard McCoy Frontier Doctor. Wanted to see Assignment Earth and the Romulan books. I enjoyed the Romulan POV of Balance of Terror . One of my episodes from Classic Trek and parts were taken from the script. I believe that Byrne had captured the spirit of Trek and recommend it

Mr. Byrne is a skilled storyteller with perfect timing, whether he is plotting an extended drama of deceit and loyalty and foolhardiness like the unfolding thriller of the Romulans and the Klingons, or a short and frugally worded incident of unstated jealousy between a certain Executive Assistant and Cat in Assignment: Earth, or a story of moral and emotional choices in patriotic protest and service under the same title. Sure, he uses multiple character and relationship tropes at least as old as English Renaissance drama, but his milking of these is human (even for aliens!), believable, and always either highly dramatic or subtly humorous. The art is wonderful as always, with manual-perfect page layouts and movie-ish "shot" variations and a complete mastery of director's "cuts" and editing. The costumes (clothing) and characters (facial expressions, etc.) are interesting--especially the Romulan commander's scarf and pants, although some of that race look a bit alike, which in fact might be true--, and spot on. In fact, I suppose a university-level class in comic book art could easily adopt this beautifully produced tome as textbook. The cover design is absolutely satisfying, especially when considering Byrne's noting elsewhere that the hardest thing about drawing the starships (not being a trekkie, I may be using this term not strictly according to canon) is getting their relative proportions correct. I say that my trektitude is very weak, but considering what Mr. Roddenberry said in an interview I found on the Net about trekkies coming from all ages and all walks of life, I suppose it's not too late for this middle-aged average white man to prepare himself to become worthy to adopt this proud title. Thank you, Mr. John Byrne, for that deep inspiration!Read more ›
