5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best Star Trek game ever
Fun puzzles, great voice acting, great lip-synching, and most emportantly -- REALLY GOOD WRITING. This game captures the spirit and feel of its source material better than any other STAR TREK game has before or since -- the reason: it has a sense of humor and a sense of camradery. 3.0 out of 5 stars It's a little noisy...
It's a lot of fun except for the noise problem. We aren't able to play this game for more than 20 minutes without the sound going birzerkers! A horrible sound starts that covers all the dialogue. I have tried multiple times to get support from the vendor, but can't get through. If I could find the fix for this problem, I'd rate the game at 5 stars. Maybe it's because it's...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, atmospheric game, November 21, 2000
This review is from: Star Trek: Judgment Rites (CD-ROM)
I played this game years ago, and loved it. Sure, the graphics may not be cutting edge these days, but then, neither are the effects of the original Star Trek series when viewed today--and folks still enjoy watching them!

You assume control of Kirk and his crew in a series of episodic adventures. You start on the bridge of the Enterprise, and receive your instructions via the view screen. Occassionally you'll engage in space combat--this option can be turned off if you're not interested in such things, but I always found that part of the game pretty fun.

Planetside, you and your landing party explore strange (sometimes really strange) new worlds, seek out new life, etc etc. While gameplay is pretty traditional (walk around, pick things up, put things together, push buttons), the stories and puzzles are challenging and engaging. A couple times quick reflexes are required, but for the most part, you can take your time. Add in the fact that this is the Enterprise crew you're controlling, and it just gets that much more fun.

There is a little violence, but nothing worse than your typical Star Trek episode. Star Trek fans will have the most fun with this adventure game, but even non-fans will enjoy this title (even if they don't get some of the references).

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Series of Episodes, November 23, 2000

This review is from: Star Trek: Judgment Rites (CD-ROM)
Judgement Rites is one of the best early Trek games. It isdesigned to be just like early Star Trek episodes. You start each mission on the bridge of the Enterprise where you receive your orders. Before you know it, you are right in the middle of a battle or something strange. The drama mounts right away. The graphics and sounds are very good and the stories rival the best episodes of Star Trek. This is a must have for all Trek fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fan Game to be sure, and DOS at that, October 28, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Star Trek: Judgment Rites (CD-ROM)
This is a game for StarTrek fans. The real attraction is the voice work is of the original cast. This is something that can never be recreated in the future because as we know, to date, two of the cast members have passed on (Dohan (Scotty), and Kelly (McCoy)).

However, it is a DOS MODE game and it will not play natively under any version of windows after win98 (maybe 2000). Your best bet will be to find and load a DOS emulator program and play it inside a virtual DOS machine. I have done so and it does work. Most problems you will have will come from sound card emulation issues. You just have to work through them.

As an alternative, you can find an old Macintosh computer to run it on. I am not a MAC fan but I got one for free maybe 10 to 15 years ago (yes the game is that old) using those useless credit card benefits and the game came with it so I played it that way too. Good stuff.

You should print a copy of the star map, so you don't get lost too often when flying around the universe. There is a copy in the game guide so if you don't mind opening it up all the time you can just use that. Although I believe in this game the combat sequences are optional.

In true TREK form, there are lots of puzzles to solve, and ideally you can find a non-violent solution to your problem. This game is in many ways a time capsule of game evolution for it is a very typical game in its execution for its day. Though as usual, everything Original Series related about Star Trek is always of a higher caliber. Just having the original cast doing the voices in this game is one example.

If you are a true Original Series Trek fan, and want to experience a TREKKER moment in history, and you are willing to subject your self and your hardware to the challanges of making a DOS game work, then you owe it to yourself to warp in. You will smile wide when you hear "he's dead Jim" come out of your own PC sound system.

Hail Flavius!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very classy, very fun, July 7, 2002
This review is from: Star Trek: Judgment Rites (CD-ROM)
I bought this game for 5 bucks at a local retail store and wasn't expecting much but this game is absolutely huge and extremely detailed, not to mention very fun. Some people have mentioned the graphics being dated, but even so they're very detailed and stylized. Sure there are no 3d texture mapped polygons or gratuituous FMVs every three seconds...that's why I liked it! Plus it has all the original cast voices and sound fx which perfectly recreate the feel of the series. A lot of time and care went into this game and it really shines. If you're a Star Trek fan you'll LOVE it, and even if you're not and you just want a fun, old school game to play then definitely check this one out.

5.0 out of 5 stars bottom line: A lot of fun!, May 23, 2002
This review is from: Star Trek: Judgment Rites (CD-ROM)
This is probably the only DOS game availible for sale these days and it is a lot more fun than some of the newer "high profile" games out there. Sure, the graphics are early 1991 but the puzzels are just the right amount of challenge without being too easy or hard and the light-hearted humor is what really steals the show. I always looked foreward to the next exiting episode(8 in all). This is a space sim and adventure game rolled up into one.(need more hybrids today) For those of you who can't run the game you need an EMS memory manager and it is better to run it from the windows desktop than in real DOS.(don't use 16 bit CD-ROM drivers it'll ruin your other games) SB soundcards need DOS drivers regardless if you run in windows or in DOS. You need to run setup in the Startrek CD serveral times until you get the sound config that is compatible with your soundcard.

* Amazon actually have acessories listed for this item, it's that important! Now if Amazon sold the Roland daughter board or Turtle Beach's daughter board...
