Book Description

Star Trek March 17, 2009
Mestiko: a world on the brink of interstellar travel -- and one that is closely and discreetly monitored by the Federation. But when a rogue pulsar sweeps through the star system, threatening to destroy all life on their planet, Starfleet must mount a desperate effort to protect the planet from annihilation.

Under the command of James T. Kirk, the Starship Enterprise™ is able to mitigate some of the damage -- but the world's surface is still devastated with appalling loss of life. Over the next three decades, the Enterprise and its crew revisit Mestiko -- whether to keep them from falling prey to the machinations of the Klingon Empire or to deliver a new method of replenishing the planet's ozone -- through trials and tribulations, hardship and strife, love and death.

Originally published as six eBooks, Mere Anarchy is the saga of one crew's career-long relationship to one world, and the ties that bound them inextricably together.

More About the Author

If you're reading this, then chances are you've read one of my books or are considering doing so.

Or, maybe you just clicked on a link by mistake while on your way to something more interesting.

Doesn't matter. Welcome!

So...about me...yeah. Well, you see, it's like this:

When I'm not writing, I'm a software developer, having become a slave to Corporate America after spending eleven years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Why did I join the military? Pretty simple, really. I'd gotten tired of people telling me what to do all the time, and was looking for a change.

Whoops.

Though I've written a few short stories and novels on my own, I've written a lot more in collaboration with my friend and fellow author, Kevin Dilmore.

What types of stories do I like to write? Pretty much the same kind I like to read: Engaging plots with interesting characters. Whether I actually succeed in crafting stories which meet those criteria are for you to decide.

Though I was born and raised primarily in Tampa, Florida, fate and circumstances have seen to it that my wife and I now call Kansas City home. My wife spends a great deal of time and effort as a volunteer K-9 handler and search & rescue tech, training along with one of our dogs in order to assist law enforcement when searching for missing persons. As you can imagine, there are a few story ideas to be gleaned from that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Celebrating 40 Years of Classic "Trek", May 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Star Trek: Mere Anarchy (Paperback)
Originally published as a series of six novellas to celebrate the original series' 40th anniversary, "Mere Anarchy" is now collected as a single-volume, trade paperback release in anticipation of the upcoming reboot on the big screen. The six stories take place across the entire run of classic "Star Trek," from the early days of the original series to the movie-era continuity.

Of course, this being a series of novellas tied into a linking theme (in this case, a planet ravaged by an environmental disaster), there are going to be some stories that work better than others. The strongest offering comes from Christopher L. Bennett, which shouldn't come as a surprise. Set in the era between the first and second classic "Trek" films, Bennett has shown before how good stories can be told in this time frame and his entry is no exception. The weakest is the second installment, a story set during the original five year mission and one that comes off as feeling like little more than an homage of all the elements that make up a stereotypical classic "Trek" episode. It's not bad, but it just doesn't feel like it's doing anything new or different.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mere Anarchy--merely average, June 17, 2009
This review is from: Star Trek: Mere Anarchy (Paperback)
I have never read an ebook collection before, and even though I have read and enjoyed most of the authors separately, I found myself quite impatient and annoyed with this ongoing tale.

At least in this form, I found it felt a great deal like a juvenile story--and I kept wanting to grab the Mestikans by the throat and shake them, while yelling, "Grow up, already! Your world was destroyed by a cosmic accident, and the Federation isn't the Supreme Being! Just because they learned it was going to happen doesn't mean they could stop it, or that they *planned* it! Your little backwater planet isn't *that* important in the scheme of things!"

Once more, I repeatedly received the impression that I was reading a kiddie book.

This book was originally written as a series of e-books, each a novella by a different author, linked by a background plot and taking place over a number of years, each story occurring subsequent to the previous one. All of the stories are extremely well-written, handle the characters well and have excellent pacing. Well worth the read for any fan of the original series.
