5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written.
This book was originally written as a series of e-books, each a novella by a different author, linked by a background plot and taking place over a number of years, each story occurring subsequent to the previous one. All of the stories are extremely well-written, handle the characters well and have excellent pacing. Well worth the read for any fan of the original series.

This review is from: Star Trek: Mere Anarchy (Paperback)
Originally published as a series of six novellas to celebrate the original series' 40th anniversary, "Mere Anarchy" is now collected as a single-volume, trade paperback release in anticipation of the upcoming reboot on the big screen. The six stories take place across the entire run of classic "Star Trek," from the early days of the original series to the movie-era continuity.

Of course, this being a series of novellas tied into a linking theme (in this case, a planet ravaged by an environmental disaster), there are going to be some stories that work better than others. The strongest offering comes from Christopher L. Bennett, which shouldn't come as a surprise. Set in the era between the first and second classic "Trek" films, Bennett has shown before how good stories can be told in this time frame and his entry is no exception. The weakest is the second installment, a story set during the original five year mission and one that comes off as feeling like little more than an homage of all the elements that make up a stereotypical classic "Trek" episode. It's not bad, but it just doesn't feel like it's doing anything new or different.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mere Anarchy--merely average, June 17, 2009
This review is from: Star Trek: Mere Anarchy (Paperback)
I have never read an ebook collection before, and even though I have read and enjoyed most of the authors separately, I found myself quite impatient and annoyed with this ongoing tale.

At least in this form, I found it felt a great deal like a juvenile story--and I kept wanting to grab the Mestikans by the throat and shake them, while yelling, "Grow up, already! Your world was destroyed by a cosmic accident, and the Federation isn't the Supreme Being! Just because they learned it was going to happen doesn't mean they could stop it, or that they *planned* it! Your little backwater planet isn't *that* important in the scheme of things!"

Once more, I repeatedly received the impression that I was reading a kiddie book.

I would have left out the word 'Mere' because as Star Trek goes it is unfortunately too descriptive. I never managed to finish the book, it is boring and the switches between authors strongly suggest that they did not read what came before in the book. Maybe it is because the world they choose was boring, or that it was not written as a book, but as a series of e-books, I have no idea why, but I did waste my money on this one.
