More About the Author

Ty was born in the wilds of downtown Canada to show business gypsies. His father, Charles, invented televangelism, wrote some best sellers, and helped to kill Elvis. His mother was a fifties singing star on the CBC TV, and his brother invented the internet. Look it all up, it's true. Ty makes his living writing and drawing comic books, working on such characters as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, The Simpsons, the Avengers, and many others. He can be seen lurking in the outskirts of downtown Canada with his lovely wife, three of his four lovely children, and his three cats, two of which are lovely, but the other one has really nasty scratched up legs that you don't want to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's a comic book. No, it's not bad., March 18, 2010
This review is from: Star Trek: Mission's End (Star Trek (IDW)) (Paperback)
This review is not going to be a summary of the plot: you can look on Wikipedia for that. Suffice it to say that this is an entertaining tale of a possible final mission for Kirk and crew. It is well written, the art is good, and it does something that, to my knowledge, has never been done before: it sheds light on why Kirk accepted promotion to the rank of admiral. If you are a fan of the original Star Trek, you'll enjoy this book. If you don't like comic books, though, don't buy it. If you can tolerate comic books, buy it. It may be in a different medium from what you're used to, but that doesn't mean the story can't be good. And, as stated before, the story IS good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but definitely not as good as it should have been, August 19, 2010
This review is from: Star Trek: Mission's End (Star Trek (IDW)) (Paperback)
At the beginning of its five-year-mission, the Enterprise visited a very strange world, a huge, incredibly ancient space station that was abandoned by its creators. On that station, a group of spiders has evolved to sapience, and it was now time for the Federation to make contact with the people.

And at the end of its five-year-mission, the Enterprise is going back to the world to participate in the ceremony marking its entry into the Federation. But, the natives of the world have advanced quicker than anyone would have thought possible, and they are becoming aware of the capabilities of their formidable station. There are people amongst the natives who want to steer the future of their world, and worse, there are people from other worlds who want the power that these people possess. It's up to Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise to figure out just what is going on, and make sure that everything comes off right...if they can stay alive long enough to do it!

First of all, let me start out by explaining that this book is a graphic novel, a sort of super-comic book. As for the story itself, I thought that it was pretty good, but definitely not as good as it should have been. The author did a very good job of capturing the essence of the characters - Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, and so on. The problem is that the story was a little too slow moving. There is a lot of talking among the characters, and the action suddenly appears and then ends just as suddenly. The author definitely did not know how to maintain a sense of drama in the story.

But, that said, I did enjoy the book, finding it to be a pretty good Star Trek story. It was nice to see the old gang back in action, as if they had blown right out of the old series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Forgettable, February 19, 2011

Mr. J (Planet Earth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Star Trek: Mission's End (Star Trek (IDW)) (Paperback)
The problem with IDW's Star Trek comics is inconsistency. Some are absolutely superb, but others really miss the mark and do disservice to the Star Trek legacy.

This particular entry features odd artwork and a ridiculous and unsophisticated story involving irrelevant aliens (a disastrous encounter with giant bugs??? Come on!) All through reading this, my only sentiment was "why should I care?" I'm not sure how the editors let this one get through.

Way back in 1986, DC comics did a completely different story about the end of the five-year mission. That comic book totally outshines this one. It's available as part of the computerized Star Trek: The Complete Comic Book Collection.

And please disregard the one-star reviews posted last year, since those reviewers did not actually review this product at all but simply complained that it is a comic book instead of a novel. That in itself is not a valid basis for complaint.
