5.0 out of 5 stars Love this movie, September 2, 2011
This review is from: Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition (Amazon Instant Video)
I love this directors cut. The added effects showing more of Vgir are excellent. Planet vulcan redone in the beginning is much better than original one. Only thing I dont like is the explosion they added for destruction of asteroid when trying to get to warp speed. Looks to cartoonish and looks obviously composited and to rich in color. The original one was fine. I wish they would put that one back. I was satisfied with the extras. I like this movie better than others because it seems more big in scope and vision like a 2001. I am not in a hurry when I watch so I dont mind the slower pace sometimes. The other movies are more like tv series style which is good but not as thought provoking and space doesnt seem as deep and spacious if that makes sense. I hope they do directors cut on blu-ray...and with luck they put the old explosion back in.

Beautiful homage to the original intent. Amazing V'GER in full light! The new spoundtrack with sound effects in place makes it worth it alone!

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow, boring, not charming, December 23, 2011
This review is from: Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition (Amazon Instant Video)
I am a longtime Star Trek fan, but this movie is a real snoozer. There is virtually no action in this film. There's no moral force acting in the plot, and the film doesn't bother to even speculate what meaning the ending has. Admiral Kirk is depicted as connivingly seizing command of the Enterprise, then incompetently commanding. Spock is shown with zero personality. Whatever sex appeal the movie might have had was tossed out the window when they shaved Ilia's head. If you don't believe me on how bad this film is, just go read its entry in W1kipedia. The actors hated the script, the costumes, and had no camraderie. The only saving grace of the film is that it was clearly the inspiration for Galaxy Quest.
