A Very Simplified Toy,

This review is from: Star Trek the Next Generation Borg Cube Ship (Toy)
I've been pulling out a lot of these older Playmates toys from storage to display, and am getting my first look at a lot of them in about 15 years. After pulling this one back out, I find my initial reaction is about the same as when I first saw it: It's not all that.
As a replica it has been greatly simplified. The filming model was literally covered with hundreds of 'greeblies' and had a very dense, layered look. While this toy has some surface detailing, it's all oversized and lacks the depth and density to give it the large scale look of the original. As a child's toy, it doesn't have a lot of playability either. You get a basic cube, four external panels, and about 24 clips that plug in to hold the panels off the surface. This doesn't give a child a lot of ways to hold the toy without pulling those side panels off. I'm sure a lot of those clips ended up lost and littering landfills everywhere too. The box art shows a battle scene similar to those seen on 'Star Trek The Next Generation' and 'Star Trek Deep Space Nine', with several Federation ships attacking a massive cube, but disappointingly this toy doesn't even come with one in-scale starship to play war games with ( much less an armada ). So after the kid has played the sound effects a few times, what's left to do with it? It would have improved the toy a bit if Playmates had included, at least, the same miniature U.S.S. Enterprise that would later be included in their much better Deep Space Nine Space Station replica. The one saving grace for collectors of this toy is that one of these actually did end up being used on-screen in an episode of 'Star Trek Voyager' ( being played with by the "Seven Of Nine" character as a child ), so in that sense, it is an accurate replica of an actual prop. So, overall, while it's cute, it's hardly worth the over-inflated prices being charged on the collector's market.

You will be assimilated with this sweet replica of the most feared ships in the galaxy, The Borg Cube! only one little thing on mine, if you barely touch one of the sound fx buttons it will go off, and i mean barely touch it. You don't even have to really push it, just touch it with a feather, at it goes off, not that that's bad, it does save me some effort.
