After a long long wait due to the extended delays from Art Asylum (AA) for their rendition of the the USS Enterprise-D, all I can say that it was well worth the wait. This toy or model is near perfection that the reason for the delay was probably because Art Asylum wanted it to be perfect. Well, almost perfect. I'll explain the flaws later. Overall, they got the model right. Unlike their Enterprise-E which was a disappointment, the Ent-D in my opinion is a winner. Every tiny bit of detail on the ship from all the painted windows to the tiny ship registrations on some parts of the hull, down to the colour scheme of the ship, the guys from AA have not missed a single detail, well except for the missing windows on the neck section of the engineering section. Kinda disappointed abt this as there were windows on the prototype models prior to its development... Other than that, this model is just perfect and a great model to represent the Galaxy Class Enterprise-D. This one knocks the Playmates Ent-D in terms of details that was released many years ago off the shelve.
Now for the flaws that is really bugging me. I can't get the battery compartment on the engineering section to open!!! It requires some prying which would damage the hull slightly surrounding the battery compartment. Once opened, there is a switch inside where you can activate it to from "Try Me" mode to "Play" mode. You can also switch it off. This is a design flaw on Art Asylum's part. Even the batt compartment on the saucer section is difficult to remove without damaging the paint job. And lastly, the display stand. Due to the saucer section, the model tend to be top heavy, so you will have to find the right balancing spot to display the ship. Otherwise, the ship will just topple forward and you risk damaging it. In my opinion, AA shd have used a different display stand for the Ent-D. The main attraction of this model is the saucer separation. And this gimmick is very well done! Probably another reason for the delay from Art Asylum as they wanted to make it close to perfection. Indeed they have and I'm pretty satisfied with it. The magnet used is probably the most powerful magnet ever used in a toy! You can simply pull off the saucer section with a bit of force and it will come off.. And don't worry about the saucer coming off while on display, don't worry coz it won't... The magnet is just too strong. But please be careful while attaching the saucer section back to the engineering section. The magnet is very powerful and once the saucer is close enough, the magnet will pull the saucer into the secondary hull with a lot of force, this will risk damaging or breaking the pegs underneath the saucer. The best way to attach the saucer back is by sliding your hand in between the magnets so that the force will not be as great, from there, you will slowly adjust the saucer to its appropriate position. Model comes with two display stand, one for the saucer section, and the other for the engineering section. In conclusion, a must have for Star Trek fans, especially fans of The Next Generation series such as myself. Minus the flaws mentioned above such as the battery compartment cover and the missing windows on the neck section etc, this is one of the better releases from Art Asylum thus far and you can see that they have put in a lot of effort for the Ent-D. Highly recommended!!!

I have the playmates 1701-D a and a micro machines enterprise. The paymates version lacks really any kind of good paint job. The micromachine has good paint but the aztec is is over the top. This diamond select has plenty of detail and the paint for the most part (more on this later) is good. The sound effects and lighting are first rate and I really like the saucer seperation ability.
As for negatives, there are two. First, the paint job on the neck is not star trek, there are no windows at all. I dont know what happened but it looks strange. They have a fix for it if you contact them. They will send out decals that you can put on. I have not tried this yet so I dont know. The second problem is that getting the thing mounted on the display stand is a excercise in balance. It just does not feel sturdy at all. Otherwise this is a great replica!

I really like the model and it is very detailed relative to others I've seen. The magnetic separation works well and holds the ship together quite well when connected. It makes for a very "swooshable" ship. The lights look great and really are an important element to convey what the ship is all about. I'm not terribly keen on the voice clips, but that's just me, I get tired of the same collection of noises being repeated over and over again on any toy.
The stand however could use some work. The entire weight of the model is supported on a rather flimsy ball joint, and since the ship is so heavily front-loaded (at least here on earth, in orbit or at warp speed it's probably not a problem.) I wasn't able to support the ship with the single stand, so right now I have both stands supporting it, but that requires the ship to be positioned in a nose-down attitude (since the saucer stand is too short), which looks kind of silly. A fully articulating stand that supports positioning the ship securely in many different poses would earn this five stars.

It's great to see such detail and craftsmanship go into making a toy like this-- I have it displayed in my studio next to my movies and entertainment center and it looks awesome. It looks more like an expensive movie replica than a toy by a long shot. Paint and details are way above par-- and the internal lighting looks exactly like the movie version of the ship. It does have a button that plays sounds fx and clips from the show... it IS a toy after all and some kid is going to want to relive some episodes with those, but luckily for me, it also has a lights-only mode, so I can just turn them on when the room is dim and it looks very cool. The saucer separates and comes back into place just like the model from the show, being held together by a magnet that is more than able to do the job-- and I can only HOPE that this company also comes out with an Enterprise ship based on the JJ Abrams movie as well in the near future. Its a real piece of art and I highly recommend this for any fan of the show... or fan of futuristic tech and sci-fi in general:) Nice addition to my collection:)

This Enterprise-D has got to be the most detailed ship I have ever had in a long while since my childhood. Everything from the warp lights and deflector lights to the voices of Captain Jean-Luc Picard really makes me wish that I had gotten this a long time ago. The one that I have recieved was, of course, a bit better than some of the other units of the same type, and so I think that I lucked out getting this one. So, my hint to all of you who are about to buy this ship: The condition of the ship may, of course, depend on what seller you buy it from. The display stand, however, could use a little more technical work, since the Enterprise-D tends to tip over a bit on the display stand due to its heavy weight (due to the magnet installed in its hull).
Overall, not too bad a ship, and she's a beauty when displayed either on your shelf or on your desk. If you're looking for a decent-quality Enterprise-D, then this would be your ship.

I bought this ship to replace an aging Playmates version, and overall it was worth it - the detailing is great, plus it's larger and the saucer separation feature is wonderful. Yeah, the ship isn't perfect (see below!) but it's definitely the best one Art Asylum has released thus far, and makes for a nice addition to a shelf or desk.
I was agonizing over whether to make the purchase or not due to the ugly lines on the secondary hull. This is obviously a production flaw, as the "All Good Things..." version (the ship with more stuff on it) HAS the windows that are supposed to be there. Those lines/missing windows, along with the lack of white/"lit" windows on the hull (they're all black/"unlit"), and the fact that the whole bridge dome area lights up (due to thin plastic), are the major deficiencies of the model. There are also some cheap-looking painted areas (such as the orange rectangles around the saucer) but they're not as big a deal. Most of the above can be fixed with some paint and other supplies (which I'm about to try*), but they shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. The lighting feature is nice, but much of the ship is made of a thin plastic (barely thicker than the bridge) and appears transparent in darker settings (the underside of the saucer and the tops of the nacelles). As long as you're not in total darkness it should be fine. The stand only really allows for the ship to be held in one position (otherwise it flops forwards) and would have been nicer if they took out the cylindrical part and just had the ball joint. Splitting the ship apart and using the other stand offers more poseability.* Don't "stack" the stand inside each other, as the bottom will be wobbly and the ship WILL eventually fall. My own model has unique problems: one of the bussard collectors (the red plastic pieces at the front of the engines) has a bubble in it. Some paint was smudged in the printing process (I had to cut off pieces of the grey paint that hardened onto the blue part of one of the nacelles). And the connecting area of the saucer (which is in two pieces) was split apart a bit, so I had to super glue it so it would look flush when docked to the rest of the ship. I know most people will be fine with the ship as-is, but I'm a picky person, and expected better after spending [...]. *NOTE: I ended up painting over some of the areas where light was shining through, as well as many of the windows, including the missing ones on the "neck" of the ship. Many hours and re-dos later, I think the effort was worth it. See the pictures section for more details!

This is ok, but the sound and lights never worked correctly. When I purchased this, I was hoping for something that at least worked. First thing I found was it only would play one sound track. I then noticed several of the lights didn't work. The model is nicely made, so I decided to keep it and display it on my desk. In the past year I have accidentally knocked it on to the floor and to my surprise it didn't break! The saucer section detached from the rest of the ship via its magnetic connection, but no damage. I'm assuming the sound and light failure out of the box is a factory defect.

This ship is awesome! The saucer section seperates, the deflector dish and warp nacelles light up, and it says many sayings and sound effects from the tv show. It comes with two stands, so you can display the main part and the saucer section seperated, or you can also display it connected.

I'm very impressed with the build and design of this Enterprise-D replica. It looks just like the ship on the classic TV show! There's a nice weight to it but it's not overly heavy. The paint job on it is excellent with no smudges.
My only complaints are that it's overly difficult to open the AAA battery compartment on the underside of the main hull. I had to pry it off with a flat-head screwdriver and made a nick in the side of the cover (mine shipped with dead batteries). Thankfully that nick is hidden from view when it's screwed back in place. Also, though the lights and sound effects are excellent (I almost squealed when hearing the effects for the first time) Captain Picard's voice sounds a bit too tinny and he talks a bit too fast. The lights only mode is perfect for displaying on a shelf and very impressive. This is the first Enterprise-D toy I've owned and I can't imagine anything else coming close to this toy's build quality and detail. Very happy with the purchase and highly recommended.

Overall, I was very pleased with this purchase. The first one I received was defective, and the lights and sounds did not function even after changing out all the batteries. Also, the detailing was a bit smeared on that item. I returned it, and Amazon immediately placed a replacement order with 2 day shipping, which pleased me. The second ship had much better paint graphics, and the light and sound functioned correctly (after replacing dead batteries, which I expected.) It is definitely a quality replica of the Enterprise D, and the saucer separation is a neat trick. I haven't experienced any problems with the stand that other's have reported, but I haven't had it very long.
It is missing the neck window decals, does anyone know if Diamond Select is still issuing replacement decals for this? I am overall very pleased with this ship, and am tempted to order a few of the other versions. It seemed that my first one was simply a fluke. |
