Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) accompany a Federation ambassador (Elinor Donahue of Father Knows Best) aboard a shuttle bound for a rendezvous with the Enterprise. The ambassador, Commissioner Nancy Hedford, needs to be treated for possible contact with an alien disease, and she haughtily insists that her escorts get through this interruption in her work as quickly as possible. But a vaporous, translucent life form called "the Companion" has other ideas, traveling across space in search of humans who can ease the loneliness of a pilot (Glenn Corbett) marooned on a barren planet for more than a century. Kirk, however, offers the stranded man an alternative: a return to civilization. Whether he wants it is another matter--he and the Companion share an extraordinary intimacy of the mind and heart. A kind of chamber drama largely set in a single locale, "Metamorphosis" was written by series producer Gene L. Coon and directed by frequent Trek helmsman Ralph Senensky. Guest stars Corbett and Donahue are a bit monotonous in their performances, a little under par for a guest shot on the series. But Coon's story compensates with another fascinating application of one of his pet themes: empathy shared between different species. Kirk and Spock's knowing looks, as they begin to understand the Companion's true feelings for her captive man, by themselves make this episode worth watching. --Tom Keogh

From the Back Cover

Kirk and his party are held prisoner by an alien on a planet whose only human inhabitant had reportedly died over a century before!

TREK TRIVIA
This episode introduced a universal translator, although the Metrons had given translators to Kirk and the Gom captain twelve episodes earlier in "Arena".
Elinor Donahue (Commisioner Nancy Hedord) appeared in the Father Knows Best TV series. Her costar in that series, Jane Wyatt, starred as Spock's mother Amanda in the next Star Trek episode to air, "Journey to Babel".

5.0 out of 5 stars Good episode of the classic Trek, August 18, 2000

I don't see why a lot of people didn't like the "Metamorphosis" episode of Star Trek because I thought it was pretty good. A man that is a well known explorer is stranded on a planet along with a cloud-like being that keeps him young and healthy by floating over him and 'talking' to him. Kirk and the crew must do something to get off the planet while they try to find out more about the classic explorer and this mysterious being.

If you like the original series of Star Trek, I recommend getting this episode. It'll keep you interested and it has some good effects. It's not one of the more action packed episodes, but that doesn't mean that it's not any good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Touching Tale of Love and Sacrifice, June 6, 2000
This review is from: Star Trek - The Original Series, Episode 31: Metamorphosis [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Maybe other reviewers found "Metamorphosis" to be a lesser "Trek" effort, but I beg to disagree. Guest stars Glen Corbett and Elinor Donahue are superb in this well-written love story. Maybe, that is the reason for its placement in the middling range of Trek favorites. But, wasn't "City on the Edge of Forever" basically the same thing?

Another plus is George Duning's moving score, reminiscent of his earlier work on the film "Picnic."
