Book Description

October 9, 2002
As a fan of Star Trek since having first seen the episode 'Devil in the Dark', Alva Underwood enjoys reading and writing about the world of the twenty-third century. She provides in this second reference a wealth of information about that world glimpsed in the original seventy-nine episodes. This reference continues the task of providing a reference for the second set ofnove1s: 1980-1983. Here is a more complete biography of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov and tantalizing bits of information about many aliens, more than the TV series could offer. Did you know that a Rigellian bloodworm comes in sizes ranging from 0.5 centimeters long to one that challenges a Terran adult python? Or that Spock was a pirate and that he served time at the Minos prison? That the crew are periodically subjected to a Sigmund? Do you know Kirk's favorite saying about being fooled? This second reference, a must have for the serious reader, continues the work begun in the first, and its intent is that it be a reference tool for the continued enjoyment of this fascinating world first conceived by Gene Roddenberry and so ably continued in the many novels.

About the Author

Retired from thirty-seven years of teaching in elementary, high school, and community-college level, she has turned her skills of writing and research to STAR TREK and its worlds as provided through the novels. After extensive reading, research, and purchase of volumes by both the professional writer and the amateur, Alva Underwood feels qualified to produce this volume and others that will follow. A fan of science fiction since the age of 9 and given the privilege of a library card, Alva continues to read science fiction and to purchase it. She owns all 349 novels about the STAR TREK world created by Gene Roddenberry and whose fans have never forgotten. She also has collected memorabilia of this world and attends, when time permits, STAR TREK conventions.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Noshing" is snacking, not stealing!, May 5, 2009
This review is from: Star Trek: Reader's Reference to the Novels: 1980-1983 (Paperback)
This is not a review actually, just a nitpick re: something that came up in a search for Jewish references in Trek. On page 135 the Yiddish term "noshing" is incorrectly defined as "stealing extra food." Not correct. It means snacking! [Yiddish nash, from nashn, to eat sweets, nibble on, from Middle High German naschen, to nibble.] A "nosh" is a snack or light meal, as in "We noshed on bagels between classes." A "nosher" is someone who noshes -- and that's NOT a thief!

Why do I care about this blooper? Because I am Jewish, and I certainly do not want my fellow Trekkers to start thinking that we Jews are a bunch of thieves because we love to nosh. A quick google search would have revealed tons of noshing blogs, restaurants, and other Jewish food sites that clearly are NOT about stealing food! (Rabbi Gershom, author of Jewish Themes in Star Trek)
