3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but..., March 17, 2002
By A Customer
I really like the story in this book, but the log format does NOT work. I can almost envision Sonya Gomez attempting Scotty's Scottish brogue while recording her log after her conversation with him. Why she would try to recite her conversations verbatim, while conveying facial characteristics and nuances is a mystery to me. If I was writing this book, I would just make her record a log, then append a recorded conversation instead of trying to blend the two, but I didn't, and the result is a mishmash of her and her tricorder, and past conversations and events as if you were actually there, all slapped together. I understand the need for different writing styles, but as I said, this doesn't work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good second part, January 27, 2002

The first part sets up this story very nicely and the second part continues the suspense and action. The story continues to use the log entry and letter format to express the story. It is very effective and lends to the suspense. Plus in this format you get different perspective which are interesting. The story is basically Commander Gomez of the SCE trying to help this race hostile to women and the Federation build a dish for mining. The problem is an alien that cuts people heads off. The ending is exciting especially the way you cut ba and forth from two perspective. The series has really improved greatly since SCE 4 and has hit it's stride.
