4.0 out of 5 stars A good episode, the romantic relationships do not overshadow the science fiction, October 9, 2011
This review is from: Star Trek - Deep Space Nine, Episode 94: For the Cause [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Ongoing romantic relationships were always a fundamental component of the story of Star Trek DS9 and in this episode the situation becomes very complicated. Commander Sisko is romantically involved with freighter captain Kasady Yates and his son Jake also has a strong relationship with her. The Federation has agreed to supply the Cardassian planets with a set of Class-4 replicators so that they can rebuild their infrastructure after the Klingon invasion. The shipment is to go through DS9 and the Maquis have vowed to prevent the replicators from ever reaching the Cardassians. Therefore, the Starfleet security forces believe that there is a Maquis spy on the station.
Circumstantial evidence is put forward that Yates is a spy as well as a runner of supplies to the Maquis. Sisko finds it difficult to accept and while he demands more substantial evidence he agrees to give Odo and his forces greater flexibility to investigate Yates.
Meanwhile Cardassian Elim Garak discovers that there is another Cardassian on the station, a female that is the daughter of a Cardassian that has sworn to kill Garak. Despite their differences, the loneliness of their existence tends to bring them together. Ever the suspicious intelligence operative, Garak is uncertain as he finds it easy to believe that she may be the bait for a trap.
At times, the convoluted relationships between the characters tend to overshadow the science fiction aspects of the DS9 episodes. That is not the case here, the relationships are fundamental to the intrigue that surrounds the events on DS9. This is a good episode; all of the deception is well played and believable.

Someone is sending supplies and information to the Maquis, so Odo and Eddington investiage. The results are shocking, Kasidy Yates is infact the person behind it all. Not knowing what to do, Sisko arrests Kasidy, his lover. He is forced to send he to prison knowing that the person he loves is behind bars because of him!
