Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Bajoran politics, religion, and recent history are at the forefront of this startling episode, in which Kira's lover, Vedek Bareil (Philip Anglim), withdraws from a campaign against Vedek Winn (Louise Fletcher) to become Bajor's Kai. (Translation: a Vedek is a priest and the Kai is essentially the Pope.) Bareil, a good man, withdraws quietly after the ever-scheming Winn presents Kira (Nana Visitor) with evidence that he collaborated with Cardassians in the murder of 43 Bajoran rebels during the planet's occupation. Kira investigates and finds the allegation has a ring of truth to it.

Bajor's troubles have always had the epic feel of a fat, wartime novel, with tragedy, moral compromise, heroism, banality, and evil intermingled with the personal affairs of once-innocent characters. All of those elements are at play in "The Collaborator," merely one chapter, though a profound one, in the running saga of Bajor's recovery from Cardassian rule. Particularly intriguing here is the contrast of styles between Bareil and his rival Winn, the former a passionate and compassionate leader while Winn is a chilling manipulator. (Yes, there's a bit of Fletcher's Oscar®-winning performance as Nurse Ratched from One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest in Vedek Winn.) Take note, too, of a quiet gesture by Odo (Rene Auberjonois) that reveals for the first time his true feelings about Kira. --Tom Keogh

From the Back Cover

After visiting Kira (Nana Visitor) on the station, Vedek Bareil (Philip Anglim) prepares to return to Bajor where he hopes to become the new Kai, religious leader of the Bajoran people. Meanwhile, Kubus (Bert Remsen), a known Cardessian collaborator, is arrested on the station. From his cell, he pleads to be allowed to return to Bajor, but Kira refuses. When Vedek Winn (Louise Fletcher), who also has visions of being elected Kat, agrees to allow the old man to return home, Kira objects. Then Winn reveals that Kubus has information which implicates Bareil in the massacre of 43 Bajoran freedom fighters. Now Kira must investigate the man she loves and prove his innocence or watch his dreams be destroyed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but quite good., December 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Trek - Deep Space Nine, Episode 44: Collaborator [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"The Collaborator" is a good Kira show, and manages to nicely develop some of the series plot-arc's. When a collaborator returns home, he is arrested, but offer's some new information about one of Bajor's more tragic events during the Cardassian occupation. "The Collaborator" does a good job of putting Kira in a bind. Winn is marvelously devious throughout the show (her scene with Sisko is a true highlight). This is also the show where Winn is allected Kai of Bajor. There are also some very interesting orb vision sequences which are superbly directed. However, in then end, some of the plot goes unresolved, and pulls the episode down from what could've been an excellent show, to a one that is quite good.
