Book Description

An original e-novella in the acclaimed Typhon Pact series! The Enterprise-E is on a diplomatic mission to the Talarian Republic, the last holdout in the Federation’s efforts to expand the Khitomer Accords in response to the emergence of the Typhon Pact. In the wake of Andor’s recent secession, the Federation is more concerned than ever with strengthening its alliances. The Talarians have been a tenuous potential partner at best, given the history of conflict and mistrust between them and the Federation. But the negotiations between Picard and the Talarians are disrupted by a growing public protest of those who are demanding greater rights—and before long, it becomes clear that the dissidents are not limiting themselves to nonviolent means….

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine Story, Terrible Price October 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mr. Bennett adds a coda to the "Typhon Pact" books in a story about the cost and struggle of a non-violent movement for change. Inspired by events in Egypt (and very timely, with the advent of Occupy Wall Street and similar movements), the character work is well-done, and the continuity touches are exactly what one has come to expect from Bennett's earlier work. On its own, it's a solid short story.

Unfortunately, it is also a remarkably expensive one. $5.99 for a short story, perhaps a very short novella, when a full 300+ page book in the Trek line is perhaps $7.99? I was hoping, based on the price, that it would at least be a substantial novella, perhaps half the size of a typical paperback. This was well short of that mark. Just based on this example, I can't say that I would be inspired to purchase future "e-novellas" unless they were a) cheaper, or b) longer.

So I'm left with the feeling that the story was worth my time, but still feeling cheated by the inflated price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where is the Book's Middle October 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As with the other books in the Typhon Pact series, this book did a good job at fleshing out alien races which previously were little more than names. The main thrust of the book is non-violence and how it can change entire societies for the better. It's well written and entertaining.

But, the book is extremely short - not even 1400 locations and finished in an evening during commercial breaks. The set-up was good and two interesting problems in two different societies were constructed and then it was over. They were resolved in a couple hundred words and they all lived happily ever after. This really needed to be fleshed out much more - it could have made for an interesting book.

As an aside, why are Dr. Crusher and Worf on the cover? She's an active participant in one of the conflicts, but Worf is barely in the book at all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Trust the Reviews - Expensive short story May 3, 2012

I usually don't follow Trek reviews because people are usually tough on authors. But this was like reading a epilogue to help fill in between books. No plot twists, only one character builds (and it was so quickly done I wasn't even sure you can call it that). I don't understand why this was even written as a separate story. It covers two newer groups, but doesn't actually build any society information. Find a website with spoilers of this story and you will be much happier for the waste of 6 dollars.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book
I loved the use of the Breen with the local "religious" sect. I am also grateful for the further development of the Picard\crushed family. I absolutely could not stop reading!

I'm reviewing this without reading it as there is NO WAY I am paying almost $6.00 for a short story of less than 80 pages. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick fun read
This was a pretty good entry in the Typhon Pact series, and very quick to read. I recommend it to anyone who has been following the novels of the past 5 years or so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good short read.
The plot was excellent, but I read it in about 2 hours, which is unusual for me. Thankfully it was priced appropriately for its length.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap...
I admit, I have not read the book. The reason is...I don't buy e-books. For one reason, the publishers charge too much for a handful of electrons. I just can't see it. Read more

This 100 page novella is a good example of the clumsy propaganda that often pops up in American popular fiction. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, a nice TNG snack
This novella has two stories, which provide a pleasing symmetry as we see complementary tales from the Khitomer and Typhon sides of the political divide. Read more
