3.0 out of 5 stars Not so much a re-imagining as a retread April 3, 2012
Format:Paperback
I'm a moderate fan of JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot. I actually enjoyed the IDW adaptation more than the movie itself, so when I heard that IDW was planning a new Trek series that would retell the original TV episodes in Abrams' version of Trek, I was intrigued with what twists they could put into those almost 50-year-old scripts. The back cover of the STAR TREK VOLUME 1 trade paperback states that "these missions re-imagine the stories from the original series in the alternate timeline created by the film, along with new threats and characters never seen before". After reading it, I say that they're really stretching that statement.

Abram's Star Trek, while maintaining Roddenberry's original concept and crew, is essentially a blank slate, meaning that the creators, whether in comic or in film, can truly go where no one has gone before. That's a pretty exciting situation; in fact, writer Mike Johnson should be encouraged to really shake things up. However, in IDW's new Star Trek series, the plots of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Galileo Seven" are almost identical to the original episodes. Yes, some supporting characters and small details have changed, but after Abrams went through so much trouble to create a distinctly different universe for his 2009 movie, why can't IDW get a little more crazy and give us some truly different stories? Wouldn't things be playing out differently in this alternate timeline? It makes no sense to keep these stories essentially the same as they were with the original crew. In fact, if we're simply going to get more of the same, I'd have preferred it if IDW had kept the original crew in place and given us adaptations of TOS.

The art is very good. Stephen Molnar and Joe Phillips perfectly capture the looks of the various crewmembers, and the layouts were excellent. Overall, this is a solid effort, and there's certainly nothing wrong with the stories (they are classics, after all), but it seems like so much more could have been done with them, especially since the material was already there. Addtionally, each adaptation is two issues, so thank goodness for Amazon's discount.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Same But Different September 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this for my Kindle Fire, despite the "negative" reviews. I knew full well it was a comic because I'm familiar with IDW and its recent publications of Star Trek based on the 2009 reboot movie. However, that information should definitely be added to the product description as it could be misleading to people who don't know that IDW is a comic book company.

Personally, I found these to be enjoyable, even though I've watched the original episodes many times. As others have said, this book collects issues 1-4 of the comic series, which are "reboots" of the episodes "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Galileo Seven." (great episodes) Some have claimed these are "the same" as the original episodes, they're not. There are numerous differences, more so with "The Galileo Seven" than WNMHGB. There are definitely things that happen in that story that didn't happen in the original episode. The same can be said in WNMHGB, but it's more "familiar territory" than "The Galileo Seven."

The stories are enjoyable, the artwork is nice. All in all, it was an enjoyable read.
