Product Description

The storyline, in which an alien turtle lands in New Orleans and goes clubbing with Harry, is a lightweight device to showcase the singer's hugely ambitious desire to be all pop things to all pop people--balladeer, funkster, jazzman, rocker. This is a relaxed, highly enjoyable ramble through tracks like "Hear Me in the Harmony," the boogie "Nobody Like You to Me," and the joyous "Never Young." --Jeff Bateman

I'm not sure about how I'd have rated this CD had I been a fan of Harry Connick Jr. -and I'm not- but I'm giving it a relatively high rating simply because -in general- it exceeded my expectations.
I had heard very good comments about Mr. Connick's music but I had also read somewhere that this particular CD was a kind of "experimental" work. Probably this was not the best choice to start with but, as I found it on a sale at a good price, I decided to give it a try... And I must confess that when I heard the first song "Space Turtle 1" I thought "Boy, what did you buy? ".
But -fortunately- decided to give it a second chance and carefully listened to it all. Well, probably this is not the kind of music I'd have thought I was going to hear but it's not at all bad. The turtle stuff is indeed a bit weird but I tend to consider it as a kind of "wink" to the audience.
All in all, this is something really different yet absolutely enjoyable and makes me think that I'd definitely like other more "orthodox" works from this artist.

Yes, this one is TOTALY different than any other one he's ever made, but that sure doesn't make it bad! I will say that the "Star Turtle" songs themselves are a bit much, but the rest of the songs, "Just Like Me," "City Beneath the Sea," "Never Young...." Make this one of the Funnest CD's I've ever heard. Perfect for a hot, summer day. I am a huge Harry Connick, Jr fan, and have liked every CD he's put out. And this one is one of the best.

Harry Connick, Jr.'s Star Turtle took me a little bit of getting used to. I wasn't real sure what he was trying to do with the music at first. It kind of grows on you, and as you listen intently to the story line going on in all of the "Star Turtles", you think, "oh, cool!"
This cd continues to show his creativity and talent continue to flourish, and as some musicians seem to lose something with each cd, Harry Connick, Jr. only continues to dazzle.

Tsk tsk tsk. Shame on all those who have come out with cries of treason and abandonment. "Oh, Harry! Where is our dance music?" I wonder if anyone has ever stopped and realized that Harry has such incredible and wide-ranging musical ability that it would be almost criminal for him to focus all of his energy in one genre. Star Turtle contains some of the music that Harry grew up listening to--New Orleans jazz/funk. I can almost sympathize with those who find the intergalactic turtle concept a little hard to swallow, but when I can play 10 or more intruments well enough to put them on a major label recording, I'll start throwing stones. Harry wanted a chance to write and produce his own work and to have some fun playing the music he grew up playing. If it weren't for the influences that manifest themselves on the Star Turtle album, then the naysayers wouldn't have their precious dance music from Harry. Please, for the sake of those who haven't heard the music yet, unless you have a knowledge of music (real music) beyond that of FM radio, please refrain from openly displaying your ignorance...especially when it pertains to musical institutions such as Harry Connick, Jr.

I never even listened to Harry Connick prior to hearing the "She" Cd. I was blown away by how good that record was and I soon found that this one is in the same musical vein as "She."
In fact they sound so similar I wonder if they weren't recorded in the same sessions.
These 2 Cds are very different from his other material. Much more Funk oriented. A lot of those who wanted to hear more Sinatra style stuff from Him didn't like these records.
I wish he'd record more music like this though. It is very unique sounding to me. Sure the "Turtle" related tracks are kinda wierd but don't let those keep you from hearing the really great tracks in between.

Fans of Harry Connick, Jr. seem to have a love/hate relationship with his music. I "loved" that CD, "hated" that CD. Step back. . . it is all Harry. No matter what, you can always hear him in the harmony. And I like that, oh yeah.

Ok. I finally got around to buying this one three years after it originally came out, simply because I was wary of the funky style. Boy was that a mistake!! I love this!! Please, please, pullleeezze don't judge this album solely because Harry isn't croonin' and swingin' This style is much better suited to his voice, and he shines on nearly every track. Be sure to check out Boozehound, Hear me in the Harmony, City Beneath the Sea, Never Young, and Eyes of the Seeker. What I love most about this album is how much Harry's love for New Orleans shows through. If only all of us were lucky enough to come from a hometown that has influnced us so much and made us so proud. Give this one a listen, if you have an open mind towards anything not involving the big band you will love it. I promise!

I bought this album not having the slightest idea what it was about. I absolutely love Harry, so I figured he couldn't go wrong. At first, I HATED this album. I figured he was just some guy trying to make money by making a rock album. I thought he had sold out.
I have since acquired an affinity for funk music. now I LOVE this album. reading the other reviews, it seems obvious that he wasn't trying to sell albums or make what people really liked. He was playing what he wanted to play; and I'm sure he was having a helluva-lotta fun doing it. this is good summer-time music. put it on when you're driving on the freeway with the top-down. or put it on when you're lounging on the beach. Or looking at the stars at night in your shorts.
it's good stuff
