If you want art by the original concept artist Ralph McQuarrie, you might be disappointed, quite like I was, to find there's not much by him here. I believe I counted maybe seven pieces by McQuarrie in the whole book -- and the best piece, Deak Starkiller vs. Darth Vader, which is on the cover and is obviously cropped a bit, is sadly zoomed in on and cropped even further inside the book, showing only a close-up detail of Vader. I was hoping to get that cover painting in its entirety, without the title lettering, along with a lot more from McQuarrie, inside this book, but unfortunately the publisher was much more interested in showcasing concepts from cartoons and videogames rather than the original concept and character designs from the original visionary artist, Ralph McQuarrie.

There are a few nice pieces within the book, with a small handful belonging to Joe Johnston (who also deserves more pages), but overall I just can't get past my disappointment that this is certainly not in any way, shape or form a definitive book of Star Wars Concept Art. I suggest seeking out the Illustrated Star Wars Universe and the six out-of-print Art of Star Wars Episode books instead -- although, they're not complete with all of McQuarrie's or Johnston's art either, there's a lot more in those books than you'll find here.

Star Wars Art: Concept continues the Star Wars series of large oversized hardcover artbooks from publisher Harry N. Abrams. The books before are Star Wars Art: Illustration, Star Wars Art: Comics and Star Wars Art: Visions.

I didn't know what to make of this book before buying. It's about concept art but there are already has dedicated artbooks for all their six movies.

Well, this book features a mixture of concept art in the style of fully painted pieces, such as those from Ralph McQuarrie, some comic style art with outlines and markers, the very textural grayscale scenes you see from Doug Chiang and digital paintings. You can really see the transition from using traditional to digital media for creating art somewhere in the middle of the book. I definitely prefer the traditional media art, even though the digital paintings are also good.

The paintings are beautiful, standard and varies, but mostly look great. The rougher ones are the digital concept art paintings.

There are portraits and character designs, locations and cool scenes. My favourites would be all the locations and background art as they are really beautiful and detailed. There are two paintings I thought are from military FPS video games until I spotted the Stormtroopers and AT-AT Walker.

Artworks are selected from the six films, animated TV series, video games (published and unpublished). Since there are so many Star Wars properties out there, only some can come from each.

Format: Hardcover
Star Wars Art: Concept is the latest in the series of Star Wars Art books from Abrams Books. The previous books in the series include Visions, Comics and Illustration. In this book, the focus is on concept art from a wide variety of artists. It also draws on more than just the films. Included is art from the films, from television and from video games. There are paintings, sketches and digital pieces all depicting various Star Wars concept images. As far as picture books go, this is a pretty nice one to look at.

The book comes in hardcover with two editions. The regular edition runs in at 176 pages with 125 illustrations. The limited edition runs in at 244 pages with 175 illustrations. It also cost ten times more than the regular edition, but it does come with five hand-signed giclee prints by Doug Chiang, Ryan Church, Joe Johnston, Iain McCaig and Erik Tiemens. The signed prints certainly make the limited edition attractive for collectors, however, I personally think the additional illustrations in the limited edition is a sore point for those who opt for the regular edition. Four hundred dollars is a lot of money for those who just want a book with the most concept art they can get.

The artwork includes quite a few artists, some more recognizable than others: Ralph McQuarrie, Joe Johnston, Nilo Rodis-Jamero, Doug Chiang, Ed Natividad, Ian McCaig, Erik Tiemens, Glen McIntosh, Ryan Church, Stian Dahlslett, Alex Jaeger, Sang Jun Lee, T.J. Frame, Warren Fu, Wayne Lo, Jackson Sze, Pat Presley, Kilian Plunkett, Steffen Sommer, Patrick Jensen, Hajime Sorayama, Chin Ko, Amy Beth Christenson, Greg Knight, Chris Voy, Eddie Del Rio, Chun Gee, Nathan Stapley, James Zhang, Richard Lim, Jan Urschel, Fabian Lacey, Kinman Chan, and Jonathan Bach.

don't buy this book if you want original artwork for Episodes 4, 5 and 6..this book has a ton of rushed digital painting for episodes 1, 2 and 3 even though the front cover is done by Ralph McQuarrie who worked on the original episode 4..I have better images off google image search ...this book cover is from someone who worked on epsiode 4 but 80% of this book is artwork from the new movies..I had instant buyer remorse when I got this push the knife in even more that artist that are "bad" their personal work and other work is better than whats in the this book has the worst painting of good artist and the good artist only count for 20% of the make your own judgement..
