Ok till you beat the game.,

This review is from: Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron (Video Game)
You begin playing this game as a stormtrooper named X1 (or X2) both X1 & X2 are the first storm troopers in the Star Wars universe, or something like that, and you are given missions (stages) to run through and complete. In the first few stages you are playing during the time of Star Wars Episode 1, and progress through each chapter of the trilogy to beyond Return Of The Jedi where as you progress your skills get better and better where you start as a weak like storm trooper and eventually become a Jedi Knight. Tho the missions are not part of what is seen in the Star Wars saga, as you are not in control of Luke Skywalker or anyone like that. This is kind of like "Shadows Of The Empire" where you are in control of someone else that is more an unseen storyline from the movies.
Most of the gameplay is a type of birdseye view of your character where you run him around to blow away the bad guys and reach certain areas of the stage. You also obtain 4 different sets of weaponry, where you have your main weapon that does not run out of ammo, and you have a secondary weapon that does more damage then the regular one, but has limited ammo, as well as another weapon that is usually a bomb of some sort. As you graduate through the game, you unlock these weapons where there are markers in the game that you can switch between these weapons as various different objects from the 4 sets of weapons are needed. However, by the time you have finished the game, this method seems almost useless and annoying making you wonder why you cant just toggle through the 8 weapons, 8 alternate weapons and 8 alternate bombs/ect. There is also stages where you are in control of an X-Wing, Speeder or Snow Speeder and things like that, where you simply just fly around and shoot tie fighters and turrets and things in space. There is more to the game play then that, but I think that is enough info for this review. So is the game any fun? For a nDS game, it's not bad. But like many of these kind of games, it falls into that well known class where it is fun/ok while you are playing it, but once you beat the game, there is no replay value due to lack of options to keep you interested. The things you unlock in this game besides weapons ect, are completely useless. there is a gallery to view the still photos you see during the campaign of the game. And about 17 achievements to earn that are worthless and unrewarding. Some of the achievements are pretty pathetic, actually, most of them are. Achievements like kill 20 storm troopers, advance to this level, and things like that make no sense as you have to defeat all the storm troopers on the stages or else the gates and doorways for level progressing won't work anyway, so why bother to make that an achievement when it's something that will happen anyway? weather you want it to or not. It may as well have achievements like "you turned this game on" - "You used the A button" - "You farted during gameplay". Those things are just not very well thought out. The other thing is once you have beaten the game, there is no desire to replay the whole thing again. And there are no new modes, levels, weapons, or anything at all to unlock once the game is completed. And even worse, there is no level select when you beat it either. If you want to go replay a mission, you have to start a campaign again and start from the beginning. I have no idea about wifi or 2 player modes, I have only played 1 player and have no desire to check those modes out. So, if you plan to check this game out, coughROMScough is your best bet. If you want to buy it, well, if you are a die hard Star Wars fan and just have to have it, then ok, but if you are thinking this might be a fun game to try, then I suggest you do not pay a lot for it. It will only take you about a day or two to finish the whole thing, and you will be disappointed in the lack of replay value that is next to none.

I bought this game for my son. He loves the game, but had it beat pretty quickly. It remains yet to be seen if there is much replay-ability to it.

The DS version of Elite Squadron was obviouly designed for a young audience, witch in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but the Battlefront series was meant for all ages, and this game really has almost no connection too the Battlefront series gameplay wise in large part simply because the DS does not have the ability to play a classic style Battlefront game, there are no command posts here except in multi player melee's witch are essentially confinded to one room and only exsit to be conqured they don't spawn troops or help you win in any real way, there are 4 classes of soldiers plus the Jedi class. each class has a weapon of infinate ammo and never overheats, so you can literaly walk through the whole stage with your finger on the trigger and blast away everything in sight theres rarely even a need to switch to your more powerful but limeted ammo weapons. The number and placement of enemy troops are fixed and will always be the the same. It's an action game, no strategy required or helpful, there's never a situation where you have to choose to go to this side of the battle field and help your buddies or recapture that command post for the fourth time, never a... should I use the Engineer class for this section or the Heavy class? Simply move forward mow down the bad guys and fight an occasional boss. In pervious BF games achiving certin goals in a fight weakend the enemy somehow, for instance if you blew up there tank or killed there snipers or caputred a command post behind enemy lines your troops could rush in and and outflank them, In the DS version of Elite Squadron there is no such tactical situations, you have a goal such as clear the enemy from a room after doing so your given a new goal as if it's a completely new stage unrelated to your actions in the privious section.
An Engineer can repair disabled vehicles and the Spy can reprogram enemy turrants to fire on the enemy both of witch sound cool but in practice trying to use the Spy in this way usually gets you killed and isn't particuler helpful or in the Engineers case you have about 2 oppertunitys in the whole game to use. Instant Action only has 4 levels, except for Hero Mode witch only has 2. The stragty for Instant action? Simplicity itself, grab the biggest and fastest firing weapon and blast anything that moves in an area the size of your living room. This IS fun, for about 10 mins. As others have noted the space and speeder missions are jokes, you go left, you go right, you hold down the fire button and don't run into anything. Even the boss battles are uninspiered, the final boss X1 is only difficult because you can't really do any damage too him and quite frankly your a wuss compared too him so you have to not get hit, this would be fine if you were doing more then seemingly one point of damage per strike to him. There are a couple or redemable qualitys... the game is abit fun if you just play it for what it is, and the biggest pro over the PSP version is the story is ALOT more detailed, the art in the game is really good I hope Dark Horse hires the artist to do a few of there covers sometime, cheracters in the PSP version often times pop up with little to no explination as too there signifigence to the plot, examples Shara, Rom Kota, and the rest of Grey Squadron, having said this while the game maybe abit fun you'll finish it and have unlocked everthing in under 6 hours, (and by unlock everything I mean you'll unlock 6 charecters for Hero Mode that play almost identical to the normal ones and 9 titles that mean nothing beyond a pat on the back for yourself.) and while the story is alot more detailed then the PSP version it's still weak and not especially intreasting. Simply put the DS cannot support a massive BF battlefield or its gameplay style ergo they should'nt have tried too, and to be honest they did'nt try too, they just made a game to sell on the DS and slapped Battlefront on it. Shame on you Lucasarts & N Space.

It is really cool because you get to be a Jedi and a Clone Trooper. You also get to explore planets that are not in the original movies. It is really fun in multi-player as well.

Come for the STAR WARS, stay for the vehicle RPGs? Just like YouTube; come for the videos and stay for the comments?
Remember how bad Revenge of the Sith GBA, the original STAR WARS on GB, STAR WARS Flight of the Falcon GBA, and STAR WARS The New Droid Army GBA were? Well, this one is pretty much just as bad. I thought that a person can play whatever level at will once they finished the levels, but see, the levels mean mini-levels which add up to a chapter and unless you finish the whole force freaking chapter, you simply can not go back and play your favourite mini-levels of the chapter. eg. Chapter 1 has a speeder bike race through the desert. Very fun. However, I only got to play it once. To play it again, I have to reset the whole game AND AS WELL AS replay all the chapters leading up to that speeder bike race. The boss of the first level, Farrado, or whatever his name is, is impossible to beat, just like Palpatine was in Revenge of the Sith GBA, and also like the chimera bosses in God of Olympus Sony PSP the original one, not the Sparta one. So if you don't beat the boss, you don't get to replay the vehicle RPGs at whill [sic] which registers as a reward on the extras part of the video game. All in all, I wish I did not get this video game. The vehicle RPGs are repeats of vehicle RPGs seen in other STAR WARS video games. The space vehicle RPG, unlike STAR WARS Elite Squadron PSP which I will get to in a second, only goes from side to side. It can not go up and down like it can on the PSP. Incidentally, STAR WARS Battlefront Elite Squadron PSP is the best STAR WARS video game ever. Look, I got a lot of STAR WARS video games. I got Lego I and Lego II on Nintendo DS. I got Attack of the Clones of GB. I had Revenge of the Sith and also New Droid Army on GB but I resold it to a pawn store. I got Flight of the Falcon, Apprentice of the Force on GBA. I also got all three STAR WARS Battlefronts on PSP. I HAD The Power of the Force I on PSP but I found it difficult, tedious, and repetitive, and I also resold Power of the Force at the Pawn Store.
