3.0 out of 5 stars Ho-hum.
As a first-person shooter enthusiast, I had high hopes for Dark Forces when I hear about it for the first time.
And as it may be a sin to compare it to Doom, because honestly and truthfully, this game is hardly what Doom is, I must say one thing....take Doom, send it through a meat grinder, out pops Dark Forces.
Everything in this game is ho-hum....half or...

Everything in this game is ho-hum....half or less than half of what Doom gives the Playstation gamer.
It's not THAT disappointing....it's still very fun to play....but the whole game seems rushed. People forgot to add more than 3 colors to walls and background images, and the pixelization is unsurpassed. Stormtroopers and items laying about look like primitive Lego models. The soundtrack isn't all that bad, but could be better....the voices are really done well though.
The levels in the game are ok....I found myself getting lost on some of them though due to the fact everything looks the same because of the limited color palette....and even some areas I'm guessing are supposed to be covered in "shadows" are in all actuality, just black spaces with no graphics at all.
The weapons are typical Star Wars guns....nothing entirely special, but it is a fun selection.

If you're a Star Wars fan, and can get this game for 5 bucks or less, by all means, add it to your collection.
But if you're a first-person shooter junkie, look elsewhere for a top-quality shooter.

Overall, an average game, 5 out of 10, possibly 5.5.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic, October 31, 2000
This review is from: Star Wars Dark Forces (Video Game)
First of all, this game is old. Its graphics [are not good], so does its sound. With that out of the way, it is pretty cool. It has fun weapons an codes especially. After about four levels, you will tire of the game becuse its a labyrinth, often to find where youre going. Luckily, many awesome levels, patches, and other things are availiable online, ehich makes the computer game fun. If youre going to get it: Get the comp one, becuase other wise its a waste of money

I don't know why peopel don't like this game I mean imagine a stormtrooper yells halt and you say eat my laser white imperial trash. The graphics are great and there are tons of guns for example laser rifle, thermal detonator, mortar gun and my favorite a PLASMA RIFLE! There's lots of badguys also like gamorrean guards, probe droids, imperial officer and imperial commando. The levels are huge, great for the BRAVE adventurer. Ho did I mention boba fett!

3.0 out of 5 stars An Average Game, At Best, January 20, 2002

Ok. This game came out in the mid 90's, but even for then, it's an average game. Nothing stands out to make it a "must have" for the Star Wars fan and gamer.

Graphically, it's a step down from the old Doom days. Characters are made of HUGE sprites--The closer you get, the more blocky they are. Backgrounds/levels are huge, but poorly done. Most levels are just plain boring and the colors are extremely dull looking.

The sound, out of everything, is fairly good. Effects and voices are above that average level. The music, though, is a disappointment. This is a 32-bit game with an 8-bit soundtrack. One thing in every Star Wars movie that's done well with pride is the music score. All Star Wars games should be no different than the movies with the same score. This game is one of those games where the music is just plain bad.

Fun value is on the average level, as well. Where most everything is dull, the enjoyment of blasting Stormtroopers, Probe Droids, etc. is fun for every Star Wars fan.

If you enjoy first person shooters and the Star Wars movie series, then give it a try. It's cheap money-wise, however, it's just that, as well (gameplay-wise)--cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Screw the reviews, this game is freakin' awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, August 11, 2011

When I first played this game as a child, I instantly fell in love with it. What's better than than a Doom-styled Star Wars game with a hint of Duke Nukem 3D? I say it's a great idea(except for Duke Nukem because it did come later), yet every great game is not with out its flaws. The graphics are quite blocky, but who really cares. The game also can have pretty choppy frame rate which actually can take away the gaming experience away from the game to some players, but overall, this game should be experienced by everyone!

3.0 out of 5 stars For the Hardcore Star Wars fan/gamer, August 17, 2010

I bought this game solely because it is Star Wars, because I am a big SW fan, and I would really only recommend this game for other SW fans.

Graphics are really bad, but that is a little expected for such an outdated system. If you bear in mind how old this game is, then you can get past the disgusting looking stormtroopers and the similar looking levels. I've seen screenshots from the PC version and they look much better, so if graphics are a big part of your enjoyment of a game, I would recommend the PC version instead.

Gameplay is very standard first person shooting, but there is an added facet of problem-solving. There are many puzzles to solve in this game to advance through the levels, some diffucult enough for me to look up a walkthrough online. I think that this kept the game interesting when the fun of shooting things wore off. Most of the levels are very boring (slogging through stormptroopers, solving the occasional problem, etc.) but one I replay quite often, the third mission. This mission is not for someone who likes the shooting aspect as there is lots of wandering through sewers, but it is quite fun to be scared out of your wits by a monster in the dark. Bosses are usually difficult, which is either a good or bad thing depending on what you're looking for.

The story is very straight forward. Empire has new superweapon, you have to destroy it. That's about it all throughout the game, with an interlude with Jabba.

I would recommend this game to the serious/ mild SW fan. It starts off a whole legacy about the main character, so it is important in this aspect, and there are a few entertaining parts. If you are interested in the gaming aspect only, I would either rent it or skip it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outdated, but still a classic., July 11, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Star Wars Dark Forces (Video Game)
Okay, I have read all the reviews here and I must get this off my chest: Why would anyone go into this game expecting anything resembling a modern 3D game? I simply don't get why anyone would not understand that a game made 15 years ago will not have graphics resembling anything modern. Anyone who judges a game based on graphics is missing the point.

Dark Forces is a very good game. Not the best by any means, but this is a classic from the early Lucasarts era. The levels are engaging and have very good puzzle elements, the graphics, while poor, are adequate for the job, and the weapons and enemies list is well-rounded.

The enemies are all well-selected for the environments they inhabit. If you're at an Imperial base, you see stormtroopers. If you're in some back-water planet's sewer system, you see Gran and Dianogas. The weapons are quite nice as well, and include classics like the E-11 Blaster Rifle and Thermal Detonator.

The story is awesome, though by now it has been done to death. An Imperial super-weapon is wreaking havoc on the Rebels, and you're sent in to stop it. The thing is, it's not a Death Star, World Devestator, or Galaxy Gun. It's something much more sinister (I won't spoil it for you if you haven't played the game).

Finally, I must give a shout-out to the main character's starship, the Moldy Crow. It's a great design in my book, and is a fitting "Millennium Falcon-esque" ship for the characters to travel around in.

All-in-all, this is a great game that desperately needs (and is getting in the form of mods to Jedi Academy) an upgrade with modern graphics. But as it is, it's a great throw-back to the era when 1st person shooters were becoming good.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of Katarn, July 23, 2001

Kyle Katarn quickly became my favorite character in the gaming world. In "Dark Forces", the first of the series, you really only begin to learn the basic brute skills of fighting. You also learn several mind skills, not powers, but necessary exercises to prepare you for the coming hazards in the next challenge(DFII on PC). This game, after 6 months of an off again on again gaming ralationship, is still very fun. This was my first game on PC, and though dated graphically, it's still better than the average nerf-herder. You now laugh at the "T" rating, because we were so innocent in them there days when blood was flying squares, but hey, fun is fun.
