4.0 out of 5 stars THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK ---NES REVIEW
When I still had my Nintendo, this was one of the best games I had. The graphics--for the time--were excellent. Playing as Luke, you could ride your Tauntaun, fly in a snowspeeder or X-Wing, fight with Darth Vader, and so forth. Unlike the SNES version, there aren't that many enemies, but the few they do have can be challenging. The large Wampas take a LONG time to kill...

4.0 out of 5 stars THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK ---NES REVIEW, July 2, 2001
This review is from: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Video Game)
When I still had my Nintendo, this was one of the best games I had. The graphics--for the time--were excellent. Playing as Luke, you could ride your Tauntaun, fly in a snowspeeder or X-Wing, fight with Darth Vader, and so forth. Unlike the SNES version, there aren't that many enemies, but the few they do have can be challenging. The large Wampas take a LONG time to kill off. Just about every action scene--involving Luke--from the movie can be re-enacted in the game. My favorite part was when I had to fight the AT-AT walkers. You start off with your snowspeeder and five or so harpoons. Typically what happens is that one uses the harpoons on the first few ATAT's, then they have to take on the rest with just their lasers--again, very LONG and tedious. Usually you'll get shot down at some point, which is where the most interesting part comes in--you can fight the ATAT's on FOOT! You blast through the stormtroopers and jump into the background. It then shows you going up the rope connected to the ATAT's belly, where you toss your grenade and blow them up. There are opportunities to jump into other snowspeeders, as well. There is no on-screen time limit, but if the ATAT's get to a certain point, they blow up the generator--like in the movie. If nothing else, play this game just to fight the ATAT's--it's a classic video game moment. This is also probably the first NES game to use realistic voice. After receiving a power-up, Yoda will say "Use the Force." You won't believe your ears. Some of the parts in this game are downright scary--I remember JUMPING one time when a motionless spider crashed down on me. The only reason why I hesitate from giving this game 5 stars is because there is no save or password option. It must be beaten in one sitting. You can overcome that obstacle by playing it on emulator, however. Of all the Star Wars games on the NES and SNES, this one is by far the best.
