Beautiful artwork, but...,

This review is from: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Volume 2 (Paperback)
As this is told through the eyes of Boba Fett - being my favourite character - and the hype from the Lucasasts guys saying this story is their Empire Strikes Back, I was hoping for something pretty special. Further to this, I found the first GN for the original Force Unleashed, a solid translation of the game. Sadly, however, this is a second rate, boring, lifeless, bordering on silly, story.
One good note; the artwork is superb. Other than that it is essentially a five scene story. Everything feels long winded, trying to fill the pages rather than projecting the story forward. I was worried the game would be this lame, but apparently this is designed to compliment the game story (and hopefully this will be better once you've played the game - but I don't see how). Personally, I loved this first game, it's story and all the associated books/merchandise. This one, so far, is feeling like they're cashing in on the first ones success... :(

I bought the Star Wars the force Unleashed II book and Graphic Novel, as I am a huge fan of Star Wars, and the Force Unleashed Story. A friend of mine has the first game and is getting the second, so I can see the game being played as a spectator. I am not a video gamer. So the only way I can see the actual game is watching it through various friends and such. Anyway on to the review. I am currently reading the Novel and I am very impressed and Highly recommend the Novel. I can say I skipped ahead to finish the book, as I had to see how it ends. On a side note they will be making a The Force Unleashed III. If they don't then they are leaving us with a terribly huge cliffhanger, that I feel MUST be resolved. So expect the final chapter to be coming out later on. The Graphic Novel is told from a completely different perspective then the book, as the whole story is told from the eyes of Boba-Fett. Yes I understand Boba is in the game and he plays an important part to the story, but I think giving his perspective for the entire story can be confusing, especially to younger readers. The art of the GN is Terrific, very well drawn. However if you only read this GN, then you are NOT getting the whole story. As a suppliment to the book (or game)it really is very good. If you are just going to read the GN, then you will be doing yourself a Tremendous injustice. I am not sure if they are putting our a younger reader's version of the Novel, However if they do, then I suggest to any younger reader just reading the comic GN to get the younger reader's story of the book. I also recommend to any adult reader, to get the actual Novel, as I feel, without the Novel you are missing so much story.

Not quite an adaptation,

I wasn't a huge fan of the first Force Unleashed graphic novel. It felt like a rushed, sub-par retelling of the game. This sequel makes the interesting choice to switch things up. Rather than directly adapt the second game's storyline and follow Starkiller's journey, Blackman focuses the script on Boba Fett. Essentially, the story covers the events of the game from Fett's perspective. Blackman attempts to humanize Fett along the way, which works in some cases and not so much in others. The real problem with this comic is that it requires the reader to have experienced the main story beforehand. A lot of the events feel random and poorly explained without the game or novelization to provide context. I would definitely suggest saving this comic until after experiencing one of those two versions. The visuals are nice, if nothing else, and the comic makes for an interesting experiment in how to craft a tie-in. It's worth a quick read in the bookstore, but not necessarily a purchase.

The graphic novel for the first TFU game was advertised as being based on the game but following different threads and being its own story. It didn't really deliver on that promise, but the second one does, with mixed results. The plot follows Boba Fett, along with Xasha, a new character, as they trail Starkiller through the events of TFU2.I was confused, however, when the comic began outright contradicting the events of the game. Mild spoilers follow. A significant portion of the story involves Boba Fett and Xasha investigating the corpse of the Gorog, the giant monster you fight on Cato Neimoidia in the game, even though events within the game make that basically impossible. Spoilers end here. I did like the artwork, but overall, this doesn't work too well either as a standalone story or as a supplement to the larger story.

I think they wanted to exploit the franchise as much as they can when they published this book. To be honest it's one of the worst stories I have seen. I guess that as a Star Wars fan you will want to know anyway but for those who are not I strongly suggest avoiding this book.

This book isn't as good as the first one. This book is a prequel to the new game and not an adaptation. The book feels rushed and the paces is brisk. I hope they make a complete adaptation of the game for those of us who haven't played the game.

I remember years ago that they made a comic book mini series on the OTHER multiplatform Star Wars project, Shadow of the Empire. That book had the main story, along with Boba Fett's perspective, on how he had to fight off other bounty hunters on his way to Tatooine to deliver Han Solo (in carbonite) to Jabba. That was a very entertaining read.
I also read The Force Unleashed part 1, and wasn't a big fan of the artwork, but it did have basic storyline featured in the Novel and the Game. Now, I've read the novel for Force Unleashed 2, which had some elements not featured in the game, such as Captain Ackbar's story on the planet Dac, Bail Organa's appearance, and Wedge Antilles' cameo, amongst other things. The Force Unleashed 2 graphic novel tells a whole different story perspective through the eyes of Boba Fett. We see him with a love interest, without his helmet, and we see how sensitive he can be. What we don't see are his appearances in the game/novel, we don't have the main storyline featured, and some discrepancies such as Fett's meeting with the Gorog, who was laying at the bottom of the arena. In the game/novel, the Arena was destroyed, but for some reason its still intact in the TFU2 comic. AND, the Gorog is still alive! The artwork is nice, HUGE improvement to the TFU1 comic, but the storyline is lacking the main TFU2 tale, and the comic even gives it a twist at the end with a group of clones Fett encounters. I enjoyed the novel, thought the comic was ok, but overall this "SEQUEL" in my opinion was all about making money since it lacks the orginality of the original, and bringing back a great character, a central character, who died fighting for what he believed in, died for the Rebellion, by cloning? Come on, now!

Boba Fett Unleashed!,

A great graphic novel that elaborates the original story of the Force Unleashed II to an unexpected degree. I also admire the fact that this graphic novel reveals a seemingly softer side to Boba Fett, which makes me think that Boba Fett is not always the bad guy everyone thinks he is. Another thing I relish is how it shows how Boba Fett accepted the assignment from Darth Vader to hunt down Starkiller. I would highly recommend readers to read this before playing the game. May the Force be with you! The Young Guardians and the Genesis Spell

Some good scenes but goes nowhere,

This review is from: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Volume 2 (Paperback)
The plot is simple - Boba Fett crosses the galaxy hunting for a high-powered force-user named Starkiller and a renegade Imperial pilot named Juno Eclipse. It leads to some very nice bits, including Boba Fett leading an assault on Juno Eclipe's rebel cruiser, but in the end it goes nowhere.
Starkiller and Juno's story goes off on its own and Fett is just there to serve the plot. The ending in particular is a dud. I'm not sure who would be interested in this since it brings characters from the video game like Proxy and Jedi master Kota but never properly introduces them. Video games fans won't get anything new and everyone else will be confused. The art is fantastic throughout but the book is completely pointless. |
