3.0 out of 5 stars Choppy dialogue, but advances NJO, March 1, 2011
This review is from: Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: Dark Tide 1: Onslaught (Mass Market Paperback)
I fondly remember Michael A. Stackpole's X-Wing series and I, Jedi. He's perhaps the best writer when it comes to dogfights and Rogue Squadron. I don't think he's as strong in the New Jedi Order with Dark Tide I: Onslaught. The book is fine, but seems to pale in comparison with its predecessor Vector Prime. It almost seems like Stackpole ignored the last bits of Vector Prime. The Yuuzhan Vong are all over the galaxy now, even though their advance ships were destroyed. Han still seems upset at Anakin over Chewie's death, but the way Salvatore portrayed it one would have thought Han had forgiven him. Most of this is acceptable. However, what really bothered me was the dialogue. It's pretty choppy. Stackpole's characters seem unable or unwilling to use contractions ("will not" instead of "won't"). At times, the dialogue just doesn't flow well. Overall, this is an enjoyable book and it advances the New Jedi Order series admirably, but I found it a bit more difficult to lose myself every time I winced at some poorly phrased sentence. Overall, 3.5 stars.
