More About the Author

Jeremy Barlow trained under famed French hit man Guy Gadbois, but almost bailed on professional killing when he realized how much yoga was involved. It's a good thing he didn't. After four decades of squeezing triggers and karate-chopping necks he recently retired to southern California, where he's taking his love for the band Sugar Ray "to the next level."

He might also be a writer and former comic book editor based in Portland, OR.

5.0 out of 5 stars At War With the Empire Vol. 3!!!! Biggs & Janek!! July 13, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This Omnibus is essentially At War With the Empire Vol. 3. All but 20 pages are taken from various points in the Empire and Rebellion series (Rebellion is the continuation of Empire) just like the At-War Omnibuses. Dark Horse basically picked 5 stories out of those series and packed them up into this book with a Rogue Squadron comic for good measure.

--X-WING Rogue Squadron #1/2: 4/5
This 20 page prequel shows a rogue squadron mission from BEFORE the battle of Yavin (the rest of the xwing series is after ROTJ). Nothing jaw-dropping but a fun read and a nice lead into...

--The Saga of Biggs DarkLighter: 5/5
The story of how Biggs defected to the Rebellion. A very cool read with some fantastic moments that give some nice background to Biggs, Hobbie, and even Luke. Some parts are definitely less awesome than others but this is a definite must-read for any Star Wars comic aficionado.

--The Bravery of Being out of Range: 3/5
An action-adventure one-shot about betrayal and running from your problems. The characters are pretty unlikable and the ending feels rushed and unsatisfying...

--To the Last Man: 5/5
This and the following two stories tell the 3-part story of an Imperial soldier named Janek Sunber. The first two are by far my favorite Star Wars comics EVER. The art style in these two is simply gorgeous. The colors are incredibly vibrant, the mechanical drawings just jump off the page, and the characters are extremely animated without the story losing seriousness. THIS IS GOOD ART!!!! The stories are great in both, too, written by none other than Star Wars chief Randy Stradley. Both of these deal with very interesting scenarios while still being very entertaining and suspenseful. I've always found the Empire to be more interesting than the rebellion and these are two of the best glances into the Empire in the whole extended universe. The first story deals with Janek's team's struggle to survive against an onslaught from an indigenous species while being totally cornered. Great stuff.

--The Wrong Side of the War: 5/5
The continuation of Janek's story and a followup to "In the Shadows of their Fathers" from At War with the Empire vol 2. Art and story are by the same two dudes as Last Man and the result is unsurprisingly awesome. This one revolves around Janek's return to an Imperial base where he has a run-in with the rebellion and Luke Skywalker in particular. AGAIN, THESE ARE MY FAVORITE TWO STAR WARS COMICS EVER!!! If you think the Empire is cool, definitely check these two out.

--My Brother, My Enemy: 3/5
The 3rd and final part of Janek's story. Unfortunately, the artist and writer are different here and the comic suffers for it. It continues the aforementioned interactions of Janek and Luke. Some cool stuff happens but the conclusion ultimately fails to pull through. This and the prior story build up a huge amount of tension between Janek and Luke revolving around their conflicting ideologies. Unfortunately, the conclusion doesn't resolve this at all and instead ends with some blatant Deus Ex that avoids resolving this series' core conflict. LAME! On another note, the art is a vastly different style than the other two Janek stories but it still looks great. Unfortunately though, it gets really crappy for one chapter in the middle. I don't know if the colorist got sick for a month or what but it looks much worse than the rest of the story. While the first two Janek stories are amazing, this one definitely drops the ball in both art and especially in story.

Again, this is basically At War with the Empire vol. 3. The "Sons of Tatooine" theme is weak at best and Dark Horse has taken these stories completely out of their original order. As I mentioned above, the 2nd Janek story is a continuation of "In the Shadows of their Fathers" from At-War-with-the-Empire #2. Also, "Small Victories" in At-War #2 is a continuation of the 3rd Janek story! THIS IS BANANAZ! If you do pick up this omnibus, I definitely recommend reading it alongside At-War #2 and hopping back and forth between omnibuses as I have mentioned here (hit up wookiepedia if you're looking for a detailed publication list). I hope that clears up the ridiculous omnibussing of the Empire series...

Ranting about continuity aside, this omnibus is great and is probably my favorite Star Wars Omnibus (Definitely liked it more than both At-War Omnibuses if nothing else). Biggs' tale and Janek's first two stories are simply must reads! While the other stories aren't quite as awesome, I still thoroughly recommend this omnibus.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new collection of Star Wars stories July 10, 2012
Format:Paperback
Perhaps one of the best things about the Star Wars universe is that there are always more stories to be told. "Star Wars Omnibus: The Other Sons of Tatooine" is one such collection of stories. Luke Skywalker was not the only important Star Wars figure to come from this small sandy planet. This graphic novel will introduce you to some new faces and give you a greater perspective on names you already know, and the stories take place around the same general time as the events in the movie "A New Hope." There is an extensive back story to fellow rebel Biggs Darklighter, a famous rebel pilot you've likely already heard of. Among others, we also meet Lieutenant Janek Sunber, an Imperial officer whose heart is in the right place, and Boshek, a man who wishes he could stay out of the war entirely.

This collection is a wonderful addition to the already extensive Star Wars universe. The stories are engaging, the art work is detailed and descriptive, and the overall effect will keep readers enthralled through the last page and beyond. If you love "Star Wars," you will surely love this graphic novel!
