Pieces are too large for the size of the board. The pieces are quite good, very realistic and even frightening. Provide a larger board and you've got a winner.

For those who may be interested, here is a listing of which pieces are included in this new chess set. For the silver "good" side, the pawns are Republic Clone Troopers, kneeling and holding a rifle. The two rooks are C3P0/R2D2 (together on one piece), and Padme firing a blaster from Episode II. The knights are Han Solo in Episode IV clothing and Chewbacca with bowcaster, and the bishops are Princess Leia from Episode IV and Luke Skywalker from Episode VI. The queen is a bearded Episode III Obi-Wan, and the king is Yoda flying through the air (resting on a piece of clear plastic) with a lightsaber. On the black "evil" side, the pawns are the Episode IV era stormtroopers, kneeling with rifles. The two rooks are Count Dooku and Darth Maul (holding a double-bladed lightsaber and doing a high kick). Bishops are General Grievous (two of his four arms are holding lightsabers) and a General Grievous bodyguard with staff. Knights are Jango Fett from Episode II flying with jet pack and firing double pistols, and Boba Fett from Episode VI, presumably firing his wrist cable. The queen is Darth Vader with lightsaber, and the king is Emperor Palpatine with hands poised for sith lightning ala Episode VI. All pieces are made from molded plastic, and weapons will most likely be deformed and wilted when you remove them from the package. If your lightsabers are not all twisted and warped, be surprised and thankful. Also, getting them put back into their proper (unmarked) place in the packaging is like a difficult jigsaw puzzle. In the end, however, this is a nice set and I believe it is worth the price.

The only disappointment with this set is that the pieces are plastic. When we picked up the box it was quite heavy so we hoped the pieces were some sort of metal. Alas. However, they are not flimsy. Some of the weapons were a bit curved out of the box but they straightened out with a little TLC. Don't even think about getting them back into the box once you've taken them out unless you wrote down where each piece came from. The board is nothing special, just cardboard, and is a little small for the size of the pieces. If you plan on playing the game I'd suggest getting a larger board. Otherwise, it's great for display purposes. This is the nicest Star Wars chess set we've seen. Buy it, you'll love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Star Wars Chess Set is a hit, January 9, 2007

My grandsons loved the chess set, but even more, they enjoyed the large pieces made in the shape of Star Wars characters. They play chess for awhile, then use the pieces to battle each other in their own made-up games. It serves double duty! The only drawback is that the board is a little small for the size of the pieces. For the serious chess player, the board needs to be larger or the pieces smaller. For kids, it is fine.

I love this set, although is not designed to play. Having the pieces so different between them makes difficult to concetrate on the game. But is very nice to show. I bought a very thick glass chess board and set it up over a table in the living room and looks fantastic.

The plastic is not very good; Yoda and Griveus tend to bend a lot. But the details are very good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Playing Pieces too large for board ., January 10, 2007
This review is from: Star Wars Saga Edition Chess Set (Toy)
The playing peices for this Star Wars Chess set are cool to look at but they are too large and awkward to move about the board. It is also a bit challenging to figure out which piece is a pawn, horse, queen..etc. I bought this for my son who knew the basics of chess and he can play it, but I'd say it is more suited for "Cool" effect then to play with. The board is just made of basic flimsy cardboard so it does not match the uniqueness of the pieces ( if you are looking to buy something for a Star Wars fan for novelty value then it is okay).

A toy in the sense that they are make believe characters but they do promote imagination in a child and at the same time teach logic and forward thinking and planning. Checkers was a good beginning but with the different moves it forces the child to reason out all the alternatives before he moves and they do love beating grandpa. After a while I'll quit letting them win.

5.0 out of 5 stars tys chess set, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Star Wars Saga Edition Chess Set (Toy)
We really like this product. The chess pieces are not glass or heavy; they are detailed and fun and are a light weight vinyl plastic; very durable for the kids. If you enjoy Star Wars, you and your children will really enjoy this chess set!

4.0 out of 5 stars Star Wars Chess Set, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Star Wars Saga Edition Chess Set (Toy)
I purchased this set for my seven year old son. We both really enjoy the pieces and they just make playing chess a little more interesitng (for his age). I sometimes get wrapped up in animating the pieces during play that I get distracted...thus he has beaten me half a dozen times. Except for the fact that the pieces don't return easily to the plastic sheet they came it, it is a good looking game. What I am going to do is get two sacks (0ne black, one white-of course) and place the pieces in there.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Star Wars Saga Edition Chess Set (Toy)
I like it a lot and play it frequently with my friends.I also like how the pieces have what piece they really are on the back and front. The only thing I could recommend is replacing C3P0 and R2D2,padmay,or princess laya, with quigon Gen. [obey wans instructor].
