4.0 out of 5 stars Fun & Educational - With Some "Fixable" Flaws
My 6 year old son was so excited to receive this gift! He loves dinosaurs, wierd ocean creatures AND Star Wars, so this combines all of those into one unique toy. Not to mention, he's been bugging me lately to get a pet (we had none). So, I figured this would be the perfect answer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great toy - disappointing results
I ordered this for myself because, well I'm a Star Wars kid from the 70's. I'm pretty sure I had all the action figures and the DeathStar for them to play in. So I thought it would be nostalgic. Overall the product is great, and fairly simple to set up. Plus my employer doesn't have a policy barring this from being proudly displayed in my cubicle. The disappointing...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun & Educational - With Some "Fixable" Flaws, December 18, 2010

My 6 year old son was so excited to receive this gift! He loves dinosaurs, wierd ocean creatures AND Star Wars, so this combines all of those into one unique toy. Not to mention, he's been bugging me lately to get a pet (we had none). So, I figured this would be the perfect answer.

I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but I feel like I have some valuable advice for those who are setting up their Naboo Sea Creature Habitat for the first time. First off, the instructions are a little vague because they offer two options for getting the eggs started - one in a small jar or container and the other option being to set up the tank and put the eggs right in. We decided to set up the tank & used spring water, as is recommended. We let it sit for 24 hours before adding 1/2 the egg mixture. In 7-10 days, you are supposed to see baby Naboo Sea Creatures, however, the instructions also say if no eggs have hatched after 3 days, you should check the water temp & add the other eggs. We were not sure if the stick-on thermometer was working but could not see any hatched eggs after 3 days, so in addition to the tank, we set up a small jar with about 3 inches of water & DISTILLED water this time & added the 2nd 1/2 of the egg mixture. Within 24 hours, we could see tiny white-orange dots "swimming" around the jar. I looked for the same tiny specks in the tank that came with the set and could not see anything and almost dumped out the water - but decided to give the tank a few more days.

About 10 days after we had set up the tank, I was feeding the tiny creaturs in the JAR when I noticed something swimming in the TANK! It was about 1/2 centimeter long! How could I have missed it? Then I noticed it swam behind the blue plastic "mountains" in the tank. It was gone for hours until we saw it again. I thought by the next day it had died & started taking apart the tank when I realized it had been stuck underneath the plastic "mountain" insert in the bottom. It was swimming upside-down and struggling to get oxygen from the water. I believe this is where it had been hiding the whole time prior to us seeing it & could be the reason why others have reported never having any creatures hatch.

My recommended "fix" for this, after reading up on Triops on the internet (the real name for the Naboo Sea Creatures) is to NOT use the blue mountains in the bottom of the tank, because the Triops can hide underneath them & get stuck! Instead, use aquarium sand from a pet store (washed in non-chlorinated water). Triops LOVE to dig in the bottom of the tank and are much happier with some type of sand/substrate!

My other recommendation is to read up on Triops on the internet, where you will find a lot of other great info on raising these unique creatures.

All in all, we've had luck & fun with this set. Even w/o the mountains, we still have the Star Wars backdrop and the base, which are cool. The base is rubber-like and makes the tank very sturdy (won't slide off a table). Just realize that the life span of Triops is only around 2 months, so if you want to keep them longer you'll have to raise multiple generations (see internet instructions for hatching eggs that your triops will lay in the tank), or get more egg packets.

This is must have for anyone who likes animals and/or Star Wars. The creatures are adorable shrimp- much cuter than sea monkeys, and less work as well. Children would need adult supervision, but these would make a perfect starter pet! We used about 1/3 of the egg mixture and a have 2 healthy "triops." They're fun to watch- they have big cartoon-y eyes and a stingy ray/shrimp-like body... they're very very busy, but they spend their free time doing flips and twirls through the water. The information booklet it came with fascinating to me and the 7-year-old recipient. Highest recommendation to someone looking for a way to bond with their kid and teach them about basic biology.

The disappointing part... only 2 "Sea Creatures" hatched and I think the bigger one ate the smaller one.

Another mom and I helped our sons to do this. We read the instructions many times and followed them word for word. Nothing hatched. What a disappointment!

The Star Wars - Naboo Sea Creatures kit was a Christmas present for my Grandson. As reported by my son a week after Christmas that nothing happened, no life in bowl. My Grandson was very disappointed. Naboo Sea Creatures not recommended.

I was extremely disappointed. My brother got this for Christmas and we both tried it right away. We followed the directions and waited a week. Nothing hatched.

What a great experience for children, and in the Star Wars theme too. Who could ask for anything more. As it turns out we are still in the waiting period for our creatures. So they have yet to hatch. I do not know how many we will get or how successful it will be. However my son is waiting with great anticipation. The process is easy to follow and the booklet was very well put together. The tank is as good if not better then any of the other kits I looked at. At this point we are happy with the product.
