Before I begin, I must make it a point that this is my very first FX lightsaber, and I'm no expert in the products by Master Replicas and Hasbro. I consider myself a Star Wars nerd, and have played with previous models of FX lightsabers, but couldn't get myself to buy one until now.

The main reason I opted for this model over those by Master Replicas and Hasbro's previous is that the blade is removable, a feature I wanted very much for when I want to display the hilt by itself.

The packaging itself from Amazon.com was fair. The box for the saber only came wrapped in a heavy-duty black bag, which, coming from my point of view, doesn't seem exactly protective. (If this is how all FX lightsabers are shipped, then I retract my complaint.)

I rushed home to take it out, and was already impressed when opening the box--the saber is very high-quality and built to last. After I put in the batteries I took the blade out to see how the hilt looks by itself.
It looks fantastic.

Hasbro included a little plastic piece that's inserted into the saber to make it look exactly like it un-lighted in the films; it's a very nice little accessory. The lightsaber also comes with a belt clip, but I haven't tried that out yet.
What also tickled my enthusiasm was that if one tries to turn the lightsaber on without the blade, it makes a short-circuit sound.

To put the blade back in (and to remove it), you have to unscrew the little orange bulb all the way, and simply slide the blade in place. The lightsaber makes a sound to confirm that it's in, and, continuing to hold the blade in place, screw the bulb back in.

With that, it works fine like any other FX lightsaber. However, I do have some gripes.

Well we all know Star Wars is awesome, but the greatest part of Star Wars (besides Carrie Fisher in a slave bikini)
The Lightsaber! A more elegant weapon for a more civilized age. And the Star Wars ForceFX Lightsaber is the closest thing to the real thing you can get. Originally created by Master Replicas but perfected by Hasbro in 2010 with the removable blade. Officially licensed and reasonably priced at $129(msrp), this is the perfect collectible for any Jedi in training and true star wars aficionado. With extending and retracting blade lights and movie accurate clashing, swinging, and idle hum sounds. From personally owning one I can attest to their exquisite quality and surprising sturdiness. The blade is polycarbonate plastic and fairly flexible and very strong. THIS IS NOT A TOY AND SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR DUELING. that being said i have enjoyed my fair share of lightsaber battles and have had the blade survive unscathed. Lightsaber models are Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Vader's with REMOVABLE BLADES...
or Vader, Anakin, Yoda, Darth Maul, Asajj Ventress, Mace Windu, or Luke(ROTJ) with FIXED BLADES

REALLY, JUST GO AHEAD AND BUY IT THERE ARE LESS ACCURATE AND LESS FUN REPLICAS FOR MORE MONEY, THIS IS THE GREATEST STAR WARS COLLECTIBLE EVER!

I have owned many of the Force FX lightsabers. This Hasbro Anakin Skywalker lightsaber replaced my Master Replicas lightsaber. Hasbro made numerous improvements to it: removable blade, better sound (volume and effects), improved display stand and display options.

The previous version was one piece (no removable blade). The advantage of having a removable blade is that one can comfortably display the lightsaber on a belt as part of a costume; this couldn't be done previously because of the ungainly nature of the lengthy blade. What's more, when removing the blade, you can cover up the opening with a specially-made emitter cover. This emulates what the actual lightsaber used for filming looks like.

In addition to the removable blade, Hasbro has made improvements to the display stand. Now you can both display the lightsaber hilt AND the blade separately or together, if you like. Of note, in the back of the display stand there is a secret/hidden compartment for storing the belt clip that is included with the saber (this was never available before until now --- nice!)

Finally, I have noticed that using the lightsaber has become an ever more satisfying experience because of a couple of factors: the lighted blade and the sound effects. As I previously mentioned, I owned the previous generation of the Force FX lightsaber, and when I compare the two, I feel that the Hasbro version is SLIGHTLY better than the earlier version. Keep in mind, however, that the previous version was stellar to begin with. The blade lights up neatly and quickly mimicking the effects of a "real" lightsaber (when power down, it too is well done). The sound fonts have been changed as well. The "hum" and clash sounds are different, and in my opinion, a better choice of sound.

This saber lights well and has a nice weight to it. Looks great. There appears to be a second delay in the sound when you wave it though. It makes no noise when you strike things with it which cheaper toy models do. I know its more of a display piece but was wondering if it is faulty in terms of its sound.....
