Why all the bad press? You CAN control the speed.,
By
This review is from: Star Wars Starfighter (CD-ROM)
I am so glad I bought this game in spite of all the bad reveiws I read. Same with downloading the demo. If you take the time to learn the controls (only a few minutes) you can control the speed quite well with boost or brake bottons. I use the Cyborg 3D gold joystick which I also like. The first mission alone flying through the canyons is great. Also there are bonus missions you can fly after completing only a few levels.Bottom line, This game has great new sound effects, and is visually better than previous Star Wars games like X-wing. Alliance. So is [money] too much? Listen, if you are like me you like Star Wars' first class effects and simple gameplay. The idea is to have fun not get overly stressed out. I buy the games so they will keep on pushing the envelope and make better and better games. I liked Rogue Squadron, and it's been exactly one year since I bought Battle for Naboo which I also like. Don't hesitate to buy from Amazon.com either if you want. I would rate the game 4 stars if there were no other ratings published but I gave it 5 stars because I think the game deserves better than it has received from other reveiwers.

Lots of fun!,

Please disregard dszeibert and stomper1's reviews. You can configure the controls. The controls do make sense for anyone who's flown a flight sim before and the menus make perfect sense to those above the 80 IQ line. I found this game to be a lot of fun. The missions were challenging and visually impressive. It's very Star Wars in its space combat style, with a lot of laser sounds and a John Williams soundtrack playing in the background. The really great thing is that after you finish, there are bonus levels and ships, so it has high replayability. It's true that the flight control is simplified. There are only three speeds; normal, boost and brake. But hey, you're flying a Naboo fighter. If I wanted realism, I would buy an F14 sim. The only thing I was disappointed in was the lack of a Multiplayer option. That would have made this game five stars. In the end, the true quality of this game is the enjoyment you get by blowing up tanks, fighters and frigates, so I definitely recommend it.

Good but Short,

First off, this game is great. It has fun and unique missions, easy controls (if you learn them), good graphics, but unfortunately, its very short. I got this game 4 days ago and beat it this morning. The levels are fairly easy, but fun. Try the game on hard, easy will leave you wanting more at the end.

The dream of the 80's has become a reality,

This is a fast paced action game with good graphics and sound. There are no complicated controls to figure out, so it is possible to get started without any frustrating delays. It has a variety of different settings, from canyons and planetary surfaces to deep space. The fact that you are taking on different alter egos is a bit unusual at first, but it only adds to the entertainment value in the long run. In the training missions you are being coached by a female, which might hurt the egos of some of the `tough and macho' players, but I think it only strengthens the futuristic character of the game. This is a great game for some quick boost of adrenaline. With a cup of coffee, this might be all you need to keep on working on your computer.I used to play video games back in the 80's, and this is the stuff we could have only dreamed of back then. So if you don't have too much time on your hands, or if you ever said that playing games is a waste of time, then this just might be your fix. (And it's healthier than pills).

Relatively fun, but horrible lockup/crash problems....,

This review is from: Star Wars Starfighter (CD-ROM)
Not the most complex PC game I've played, but I found what I was able to experience relatively fun for a fairly straightforward arcade-style starfighter game. Unfortunately, the game always crashes to my PC's desktop after 5-15 minutes without warning, and LucasArts' tech support has been a repeatedly frustrating exercise in futility. *All* possible problems via my (relatively high-end) system or a bad CD printing have been eliminated, and it looks like all the bugs simply weren't worked out before release. This wouldn't be the first time I've had such a problem with LucasArts games when they first come out. Not a bad game, but if you're looking at it, I'd recommend waiting for patches to come out and the price to drop some more. Otherwise, you're taking your chances with compatibility, etc. (Oh! Also, you definitely need a joystick or gamepad to play. Use a keyboard/mouse only, and you can't last 10 seconds.)

Does not live up to the Lucas Arts Reputation...,

I bought the game at Walmart for 9.99. I've always been a fan of Star Wars and Lucas Arts and decided to buy it. It wasn't a mistake, but it certainly isn't the best game ever.GOOD THINGS BAD POINTS All in all, I don't suggest buying this game. It's fun, but there are other Star Wars games that are better.

Great new entry in the Star Wars combat sim category!,

If you loved Rogue Squadron but were disappointed by Battle for Naboo, you'll enjoy this title. You fly three great ships from the Phantom Menace era, plus Lucasarts has continued their excellent tradition of offering bonus missions and craft. The graphics in this game are generally very good, with explosions and effects that are much better than Battle for Naboo (however, those with high standards will notice that some explosions, particularly on the surface missions, look decidedly less realistic than the ones in space). Still, you'll enjoy the speed and power of these ships, although the joystick implementation could have been better (for example, you can't control your speed with the throttle and I am constantly correcting for roll). The cutscenes and game immersion elements are superb, as is the voice acting and general continuity with the Star Wars universe. Although it's not a long game, it's well worth it considering the extras. (Another note: the strategy guide that has been published for this title is for the PS2 version. I don't know if the cheat codes work with the PC version).

This game has nothing on the original "X-Wing" trilogy. A good flyer can complete the entire set of missions in less than two hours. But the graphics are great and so are the flight environments. Not only do you fly in space, but there are atmospheric missions as well. And you face dozens of enemies, whereas the original Star Wars starfighter games only gave you a few things to shoot at at a time. It's kind of cool to be absolutely overwhelmed by fire from enemy fighters, ground troops and even boats. The story is a little cheesy, but the game is very entertaining and challenging at the higher levels. Very re-playable. I still miss "X-Wing", though.

I bought this because my operating system doesn't run the Rogue Squadron game. Let me start out with the pros:1. The graphics are much better than the Rogue Squadron game. The various "worlds" that you go to during gameplay, are very detailed. The reflections of objects against water are very believable. Most of the ships look almost identical to the ones from the Phantom Menace movie. 2. The controls are very easy to customize any way you want. You can assign actions to keyboard keys or joystick buttons easily. 3. The sound effects are incredible. You really feel like you're in the world of the game. 4. The additional objectives in each mission make the game a little more interesting and the adjustable difficulty levels also add to the game. Now on the the cons: 1. The game is, in my opinion, too short. They really could have made a section that allows you to play the game from the trade federation side (similar to the empire vs. rebellion sides you can play in the Empire at War game). They also could have added much more to the game's story. 2. I was VERY dissapionted that the didn't include an arcade style "free play" mode where you are pitted against unlimited waves of ships. The closest thing to this are some training missions that allow you to destroy ten waves of enemy ships. Two of the missions take place in space and the other two take place on a planet. 3. The game lacks a multiplayer feature. In conclusion, this is a good game if you want a flight simulator based on the Phantom Menace. If you want a game with a longer gameplay and more dogfighting options, I would recommend a different game.
