Star Wars Trilogy Series Y-Wing,

This review is from: Star Wars Trilogy Y-Wing - Rare Item! (Toy)
This is the same Y-wing fighter for the Hasbro 3 3/4" Star Wars figures that was released several years ago as a Target exclusive, save that it is painted with a red trim, blue canopy frame, and silver body. It is essentially a copy of the origional Kenner Y-wing from the early 1980s, but without the electronics and removable R2 Robot unit. The landing gear retract using a switch, a bomb can be attached and dropped by pushing a button, the canopy opens sideways (like in the movies), the cockpit is detailed and seats one figure, the ion cannons elevate and rotate, the R2 Robot's head turns.
I was surprised when I found this at a Toys R Us, and quite pleased as I had previously been unable to purchase the rare POTF Y-wing released at Target. My hats off to Hasbro for providing a second chance. The vehicle, while undersized in scale, nonetheless appears accurate to the movie version. It is NOT loaded with funky, innacurate features as some Hasbro Star Wars vehicles are. A removable R2 unit (like on the large X-wing just released) would have been preferable, however. The paint job is nice and includes some wear and tear. All in all, the Y-wing is a good addition to a Star Wars vehicle collection.

I knew I had to get one of these Original Trilogy Series Y-Wings when I heard they were coming out since I was never able to get one of the Target exclusive POTF Y-Wings from a few years back.
When I first saw the pictures, I wasn't sure I liked the paint job. But when you look at the ship in person, it actually looks pretty good. The chrome/silver color of most of the rear and the engines looks pretty cool. There are even some copper colored lines that look like tubes and pipes. The detail molded into the body is pretty impressive. The red and blue on the cockpit and front of the ship looks pretty nice too, although I still prefer the yellow and white of the POTF version. There are a few black marks scattered around the body to simulate battle damage and wear which is a nice touch. The ship comes fully assembled with all decals applied right out of the box. Hasbro did a good job of securely packaging the toy so nothing would fall off during shipping. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the the engine pods were all straight on my ship! The Y-Wing comes with a bomb that you can attach to the bottom. Push a button just behind the rotating R2 head to release it. There is also a sliding lever further back that lowers and raises the landing gear. As a previous reviewer noted, the front landing gear doesn't retract all the way, but it isn't too bad. A rotating laser cannon on top of the cockpit can be manually swivelled around. I still wish the ship had a removable R2 unit. The rotating R2 head that comes with the ship just doesn't look that good to me. Having a space to put in your own R2 figure (like on the Red Leader X-Wing) would have been nicer. Overall, I still like this ship a lot. If you are like me and missed out on the Y-Wing that was released a little while back, you will want to pick one of these up. It is a good looking ship and is a great addition to anyone's collection!

This new Y wing is awesome! Comes already decaled, all you have to do is unstrap the figure and put him in the ship! very realistic-it would be nice if these new ships had some elctronics like the Falcon, but this is really nice! Seems durable but is an excellent display piece to! Well worth the money!

This Y-Wing fighter is a re-issue of a toy that was first produced in 1983. The original had electronic sounds and a few detail differences than this one. This new one is identical to one sold in 2000 but with the paint job of the Y-Wings in Return of the Jedi (Episode VI). The ones sold in 1983 and 2000 have the yellow stripes of the ships in A New Hope (Episode IV). Without the electronics of the original toy, there is less to go wrong and I guess the costs to make this toy would be less (you can still see the mold lines where the batteries originally went). The original toy had larger front cannons that were more like the movies (but could fall out easier). The original toy also had a slot for a separate R2 unit. This toy now has a fixed R2 rotating head. The advantage of this is that when the ship is rolled upside down, the R2 unit will not fall out. It also makes the ship simpler for when young kids play with it. A few nitpics with this toy are the rear engine pylon extension assemblies come off easily, the front landing gear does not retract fully, and the left rear landing gear on mine partly collapses sometimes. The pilot of the ship is the wrong one (the box says this is Jon "Dutch" Vander from the battle of Yavin in A New Hope). A Return of the Jedi pilot would have a grey suit and a helmet like the one on the pilot of the A-Wing fighter toy. Of course my young son does not know that, and we have had a lot of fun playing against each other (he has a toy TIE fighter).

It's another Y-wing, which is great and all. But since the new SW toys have been comming out in the 90's isn't it time for a rebel transport? We've seen a dozen different or re-re-released X-wings, a couple of each other ship. If you haven't gotten at least one yet, it's your loss. Let's move on Hasbro. Jabba's Sail Barge would be great, even if it is 100 or more dollars. I'm sure we could scrape up the pennies to buy it. With the Sandcrawler comming out, I'm sure something can be done off-scale and affordable. Heck other toy companies are making 1/6 scale tanks for 350 a pop, and they're flying off the shelves. Well that's my gripe, other than that this is a must add to your collection.
