Get this comic book!!, July 2, 2004
This review is from: Star Wars: Union (Paperback)
I usually don't read comic books but I decided that I would try this one. Amazingly I actually liked it. Luke and all the rest looked like they were supposed to-not like in some Star Wars comic books. I would have preferred a novel about Luke and Mara's wedding like Han and Leia's but I have to admit that this comic was okay. So for those that like comic books or those that just want this because it has Luke and Mara's wedding--get it!

At last! The wedding of Luke and Mara!, December 18, 2002
This review is from: Star Wars: Union (Paperback)
I guess there had been hints and clues about Luke Skywalker's and Mara Jade's potential romance throughout the entire Star Wars series of novels, but it signs didn't get strong until the early part of Timothy Zahn's "Hand of Thrawn" duology. Yet, when the signs started pointing in that direction, it was really exciting to follow the progression over these two books and enormously satisfying once they revealed their love to each other. Once that duology ended, though, the question was "how is the wedding of Luke and Mara going to be handled?" Fortunately, for all Star Wars fans, it was not presented as part of written novel. The decision to present the events surrounding the wedding and the ceremony itself as a graphic novel was the correct one. The artistic renderings of Luke and Mara in this comic book reveal a greater depth of meaning and emotion about this momentous even than 100 pages of writing could. There is somewhat of a disposable subplot involving some angry Imperial leftovers who are looking to disrupt the wedding, but the true focal point is the wedding itself. There are two ceremonies, one Jedi and one general, for Luke and Mara and they are represented beautifully in the artwork. One cannot help but feel nothing but joy for this happy couple that we have gotten to know and love over the years. This type of happiness is well deserved.

Interesting comic of Luke's and Mara's wedding., December 10, 2001
This review is from: Star Wars: Union (Paperback)
Personally, I would have liked that Luke and Mara's wedding be in a novel form, but having a comic like "Union" is, does have its pluses. For one, we actually could see the characters and what they were doing. The dialogue at times can be confusing (like the bar room brawl and the people plotting against the wedding), but overall it makes sense and Michael Stackpole does a good job at it. The biggest problem I have with the comic was the picturing and drawings. Certainly the known characters we know from the movie trilogy look like they should look like (though at times, I think Luke and Han could have been drawn better), but I felt that the drawings weren't as good as some of the past comics, like the comic adaption of the Timothy Zahn book, "Dark Force Rising", which I feel is the best comic version out of almost all of them. With the drawings, Mara herself could have looked much better, which brings back the comic of DFR, which I felt had Mara down to the hilt of the way that Zahn wrote her. Besides that, "Union" was a excellent entry into the Star Wars universe with the marriage of probably the most famous person from the original movie trilogy, Luke Skywalker (duh!). It does have some problems (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars), but it is a refresher before the New Jedi Order book series, which I hate overall (the exception being the birth of Luke and Mara's son Ben).
