Star Wars is a tough game. I'd say one of the tougher of the NES library, which is pretty stacked with bruisers. Star Wars' difficulty is mostly fair, but it's not above a little cheeseball difficulty every now and then. Several enemies are either invincible (like the droids) or take a ton of hits (such as the sandpeople). The levels piloting the X-Wing and Millennium Falcon are brutal which require a completely different skillset than anything you've seen to that point. Even worse, each failure costs you an entire continue. The upside is the game gives you several continues to play with, but until you figure out those levels, they'll still run out quick. Once you master it, though, it's a pretty learnable game.

The backgrounds and character portraits were quite good for the time, but Luke's sprite always looked pretty doofy, even when I first read about this game in Nintendo Power. His head is square, and he has absolutely no face. Han and Leia's character sprites are much better, and the movement animation is great for all of 'em, but Luke's square no-face always irked me. He's the only character who gets extra lives, too, so you'll almost always be playing as him, since it gets a little inconvenient if Leia or Han bites it.

Star Wars is a charming game. There's good variety to the levels, and it does a fair job of staying true to the plot and tone of the film without trying to do too much. It's pretty short (once you've mastered the gameplay, a playthrough takes about a half-hour). It's fun, though, and that's the important thing. Probably my favorite Star Wars game.

My favorite video game of all time. My grandma got me the gameboy version when I was a kid and I got good at it. I used to be able to sprint through the whole game with no deaths, but not anymore, lol. This game brings back a lot of memories, but I think the gameplay is pretty good, even if you have no sentimental attachment to the game.

Basically, there are two things that really drag this game down. First of all, like many other NES games there is no save option OR password option. You HAVE to beat it in one sitting. Finally, you think beating it in one sitting sounds easy? Believe me, this game will challenge even the best of video-gamers. You probably CAN beat it, just expect to replay the game a million times until you can recite the level layout in your sleep. Although it didn't detract from my limited enjoyment of the game, I though that some of the graphics were downright goofy. I mean, Luke Skywalker looks like he's wearing a diaper for crying out loud! But now on to the positive. The game follows the movie closely, as it should. You can play as Leia, Luke, or Han Solo. You can also fly a variety of vehicles. But overall, this game is just not that good, for all the reasons I mentioned above. The sequel (The Empire Strikes Back for NES), however, was much better.

This is permanently in my reviews list, and I've never bought it, but it drives me crazy that it is here. I am beginning to think this is a test by Amazon to see how OCD I am.
