Check Your OS First!, January 31, 2010
This review is from: StarTech USB to Infrared IrDA Adapter (USB2IR2) (Personal Computers)
I had the same experience as Thomas Schnyder. Wasted a couple of hours trying to install this, and finally called Startech tech support and got the scoop - Check your OS, because the USB2IR2 won't work on a 64-bit OS. Startech now has the USB2IRX, which you will need if your OS is 64-bit. I don't fault the device, but I give Startech points off for not making this clear on the product promo material, but give their Tech Support a high grade for quickly helping me ID the problem in just a few minutes and tell me the solution.

Not compatible with Windows Vista (64 bit), November 1, 2009
This review is from: StarTech USB to Infrared IrDA Adapter (USB2IR2) (Personal Computers)
After trying for hours to install the device I contacted the manufacturer (Star Tech) and got excellent support and explanations:
Thank you for your inquiry! We are sorry to hear about your technical difficulty. We don't support Vista 64-bit for the USB2IR2 and there are no drivers available. Tanic (the manufacturer of the chipset we incorporate inside the adapter) has chosen not to provide them, so we don't have any to supply. The adapter works under Vista 32-bit only, these are the drivers provided in the download.
In this situation, you're best to contact the point of purchase and let them know you've spoken to us, that there's no way to make this work and that a return for credit is necessary. We're planning on releasing another adapter in the future (the USB2IRX) which will support Vista-64, but I don't have a timetable for this. I apologize for the inconvenience!
So I would definitely rate the product and product support very high.
Then I contacted ANTOnline and was told to return the item but was not given a RMA (return authorization) indicating that they are not taking back items that are opened! How else would you find out if the device is working??? What a waste of time!
The poor rating only refers to ANTOnline for their lack of support.

Not working for my application, January 16, 2009
This review is from: StarTech USB to Infrared IrDA Adapter (USB2IR2) (Personal Computers)
Bought this unit to HotSync my ol' Palm Vx to my very new PC with Windows Vista 64 bit, per a Forum recommendation. The unit actually works just fine and it is no fault of the product that it doesn't meet my needs. It is simply Palm's failure to stay abrest of new software technology an OS arrivals over time. I'm frustrated but not with this IR unit.
