This converter does what it says it does - it converts a serial stream into a TCP stream. You basically open a TCP socket connection to this device and read the same bytes you would read if you had a serial connection to the data source. The only problem is that when the device turns on, there is a glitch where it writes a byte onto the serial bus without it being commanded to. In a lab setting that might be fine, but definitely not ok in a production setting.

Setup isn't as easy as it may seem when you don't have the right network prefix, but I didn't take no for an answer. Once setup, I was seriously disappointed that it doesn't support Windows 7 64. Should have read that fine print.

I have an Aurora solar inverter that puts out RS485 data in my garage. I screwed this little unit into the wall right next to the inverter panel...set it up with my notebook PC using the built in web page...connected my RS485 twisted pair wires coming from my inverter in to the RS485 terminals on the StarTech module...connected my LAN into the RJ45 connector and my solar array data was immediately available on my upstairs desktop. I love projects where you can go directly from the box to functional operation without problems. It has been running 24 hours a day for the past month and is still going strong.
