Worked on usb 3.0 and 2.0 ports.
Electronics is Me
Used it with a 2.5" SATA drive and a 3.5" IDE drive and it worked great for both (read/follow the instructions!).

I did quite a lot of research into this and finally came across this product.

We use these in our Tech Dept a lot. They are great for testing multiple types of hard-disk drives. Also, if you have some spare/old hard-disk drives lying around, it is a handy way to turn those drives into external backup drives. A few on our staff even have these at home to use in this manner, rather than spending money on a pre-packaged external hard-disk drive in an enclosure. There are some similar units to this out there on the market. We like the Startech as it is a little more compact, choosing to integrate the power connectors. But you have to be attentive to making sure you flip the switch on the connector to power on your device. While I wouldn't think that is such a big deal, I've seen some users get a little befuddled about that. And you don't even need the power connector when working with 2.5" IDE laptop hard-disk drives, as they will be powered via the USB port.

I wouldn't recommend this device for creating a daily use external drive but if you are a techie that has to go through many different styles and sizes of internal drives this is for you. Heck at this price it is even worth it for the casual user who needs to get data off an old drive or just wants it for "just in case".

If you image your primary drive this would be an option too. Drives are cheap enough you can image to a drive then just store the drive off-site. Beats the heck out of having to deal with a case based external solution. This is just plug in and go.

It allows you to hookup most hard drives, modern and old, laptop and desktop, and read them via a USB port on your existing computer or laptop. No tiny screws to deal with or external cases to have to take apart and put back together just plug in the applicable plugs and plug it into your computer.

The only real downside is having to have a power brick with it but that is not too big a deal. I travel with it when doing site visits and even with the power brick it doesn't take up that much space in my laptop bag.

Ordered this item July 25, 2013 and received it the next day. My son had an Acer laptop that got fried after his son spilled iced Tea all over the keyboard. The laptop was about 5 or 6 years old but my daughter-in-law stored all her digital camera pictures on the hard drive. With the laptop fried, there was no way to retrieve the pictures. She gave it to a friend of hers to see if the pictures could be saved but with no luck. I asked her to let me look at the laptop to see what I could do. After getting the laptop, I found out real fast that there was a short circuit somewhere on the printed circuit board. I then proceeded to pull the hard drive out of the laptop, hoping that it wasn't crashed. Then I hunted around for a device that could both power up the hard drive and extract the information via USB2 connector. Google led me to Amazon where I hit on this device. After reading all the good and bad posts, I figured it was a crap shoot and maybe I would get lucky. So I ordered the StarTech USB 2.0 to SATA IDE Adapter (USB2SATAIDE) from Amazon. I had two other hard drives laying around both of which were IDE hard drives. The hard drive I pulled from my son's laptop was a SATA hard drive. I decided to test the adapter on the IDE drives first. When trying to plug the data pickup device to the IDE drive, I found that lining up the pins on the hard drive was challenging and very stiff. The first time I bent a couple pins on the hard drive. After straightening them out, I tried to plug the data pickup to the drive again. This time I was successful. I disconnected and reconnected the device to the hard drive a few time and the operation got smoother.Read more ›

We have been looking for a product in our shop that does everything this one does. It is not several pieces so we don't lose them. It has the on/off switch which is extremely convenient. We have tried several products and they were either inconvenient and clumsy to work with or just didn't last very long. I don't think we will be replacing this one anytime soon because of it's quality, but if I need another one it will be the same one. Well worth the slightly higher price!

Everybody who works on computers should own one of these adapters. I've gone through a pile of the things over the years and have used several brands - this Startech is my favorite to date. The most common point of failure in these adapters is the power brick. If you plan to use the adapter regularly, buy a higher quality one like this Startech which has a beefier ac adapter with separately switched leads for the 4 pin and sata power connectors. The data connectors are of very good quality as well and the device has connection/busy status LEDs. My only complaint is that the sata connector should be on the top rather than the end so that it need not be removed to connect a 3.5 IDE drive.

TL;DR - Buy this adapter instead of wasting time with the cheaper ones.

I ordered one of these and it never worked. I use these types of adapters often and am very familiar with them. Amazon was great in allowing me to return it and swap it for the same kind (thinking I had simply gotten a "lemon"). The replacement unit also failed to work. When opening the box I noticed that all the parts and cables barely fit in the box and were jammed in there. The USB cable had a 90° kink in it (no bueno for a data cable) and was probably the cause of the problem. The power cable worked fine. The problem probably isn't the workmanship -- it's a problem with the packaging and shipping. However, "2 strikes and you're out." I'll try a different brand.
