Product Description

This 2.5in IDE to Dual Compact Flash SSD Adapter Card allows you to convert one or two Compact Flash (CF type I/II) cards or MicroDrives into a bootable IDE Solid State Drive - a simple and convenient way to replace a 2.5in IDE hard disk drive. The IDE to Dual CF adapter card makes it easy to build your own do-it-yourself SSD (requires CF card or Micro Drive), allowing you to take advantage of the benefits that Solid State storage has to offer. With no moving parts, a SSD is the ideal addition to virtually any working environment, because it provides cooler and quieter storage than a conventional hard disk drive. Plus, Solid State drives are less susceptible to atmospheric hazards (e.g. dust particles, atmospheric changes etc.), ensuring seamless performance regardless of environmental factors. A highly reliable storage solution, the IDE to Compact Flash SSD Adapter Card is backed by StarTech.com's Lifetime Warranty and free, lifetime technical support.

Startech makes quality products, so I wasn't suprised to see a well made, heavy duty circuit board. It worked flawlessly in my stoneage Panasonic Toughbook. And, it did help speed things up. This netbook had previosly been used only to configure routers/switches via minicom... but now it needed to perform more demanding duties.

Some random stuff...

1. Make sure you are io bound: does your computer spend a significant amount of time in iowait?
2. The IDE bus is slow... and small capacity: This device, or a SSD will do nothing to overcome that.
3. Would reduced latency improve your computer: This is true for folk's that run a window manager.
4. Are you doing large amounts of disk io: If so a good solution would be to do raid0 over 2 sandisk extreme cf cards. But then you might be reaching the upper bounds of the IDE bus.

At any rate, this device did make my old laptop more usable. And, this is a quality device with a lifetime warranty. So for those reasons, I recommend this device.

I only have one machine to test this in and I couldn't get it to reliably boot from this adapter. I concede that it may be the laptop I am using, which doesn't have any problem with a traditional spinning disk or a Sintechi-based adapter ( http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DGNYXQ0), but I won't completely knock this particular product to heavy since it could be a quirk of my particular machine. Unfortunately, I don't have another PATA-based laptop to test with so can't be more thorough with my testing. The aforementioned Sintechi-based adapter has been great with SD cards, however, so unless you are really set on using a CF card then perhaps the other adapter would be better for you as it was for me.

This kind of adapter let's me reuse an old laptop computer with no HDD because is an IBM model. I Put Ubuntu OS to work inside the compactflash cards. And now There are 3 computers in home for a different use. The velocity read/write are low. Really I feel it's time to renew all this obsolet equipment to avoid contaminate the earth.
