Product Description

Turn Virtually any 2.5" SATA or SAS Hard Drive into a 3.5" SATA Drive - The 25SATSAS35 2.5-inch SATA/SAS to 3.5-inch SATA Hard Drive Converter converts a 2.5-inch SATA or SAS hard drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) into a 3.5-inch form factor SATA Hard Drive. The converter provides a versatile solution for 2.5-inch drive installations, enabling you to install a 2.5-inch SATA/SAS drive in a 3.5-inch bay, drive drawer caddy/tray, or into a 3.5-inch drive enclosure. To maximize performance and utilize the full speed potential of your SATA III hard drives, this HDD Backplane supports SATA III for transfer speeds up to 6 Gbps when paired with compatible controller. Suitable for drives with a height of up to 15mm, virtually any 2.5-inch SATA or SAS hard drive can be made to look and function like a 3.5-inch hard drive - complete with standard mounting points along the sides and bottom (including 3 points along the sides for compatibility with some Dell systems). The Drive Converter features a trayless design for simple drive installation and removal, and is constructed of durable, yet lightweight plastics, with ventilation openings to aid air flow and help keep hard drives running cooler. Backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

This drive converter solves a big problem of mine. All my RAID arrays are outfitted with trayless 3.5" bays so incorporating 2.5" SSDs poses a major logistical problem. Even though a previous review reported poor fit, I bought one anyway just to test it out. Happily the SSDs fit perfectly into this converter, which in turn fit perfectly into the 3.5" bays. I've tested with about 2-dozen insertions into different bays, and the drive has fired up every single time. I've confirmed SATA III 6Gb/s operating speeds through the converter.

The big advantage of these converters is they allow air circulation across the SSD. All the trayless 3.5" bays have rear-mounted fans that draw air from front to back, and these converters are designed in such a way as to make good use of this cooling air. This a big relief because even though SSDs (and regular 2.5" drives) are low-power, they can still generate enough heat in an enclosed space to cause damage.

Out of curiosity, I tried fitting the converter into an internal 3.5" bay, and the holes were indeed a tad bit off (enough to have to break out a drill). Still more curious, I scrounged around and found 3 old cases with 3.5" floppy bays. Voila. The holes aligned perfectly and the fit was spot on. I guess the lesson here is if you're drill-challenged, find an old case with a 3.5" floppy bay.

I like these converters so much, I'm buying a bunch more.

Oh, one more thing, inserting and removing drives into the converter can get kind of sticky. It takes patience and gentle rocking motions.

It will be perfect if these problems can be fixed:

-- slightly bigger than a 3.5 drive
-- 6 mounting holes on two side are not at right positions. I had to drill holes myself to mount it on a standard tray
-- the 2.5 inch SSD seems not so stable in the case. I drilled two holes at bottom to put 2 screws.

It worked after some efforts. Fortunately, I am a person who likes drilling holes.

I tried to install my 2.5 SSD and it didn't seem to want to connect-- the drive would not fully insert. I started second guessing myself-- "Is that a SAS connection in there?" "Is this the wrong adapter?" "Should I exchange it?"
Before I did that, I actually took it apart and found that there is a little arm that prevents you from manually inserting the drive-- if you force it it will break. To properly insert/mount the drive, simply insert it as far as it will go, then simply close the latch! The same mechanism that doesn't allow you to insert it manually is the same as the 'eject' function for the enclosure.

Once I figured that out, all was well. ;-)

But, perhaps a picture for us newbs or even a label/sticker that says close latch to insert drive. Hmm, maybe if I worked with servers/HDD caddy's more, but I don't so it was a tough one to crack.

I tried to use it for SAS hard drive. No luck. Ordered replacement, same thing. You can't use this adapter for the external enclosure for SAS, period. It should be added to the description of the product.

Works as advertised and it's simple and easy to use. We used two of these in our Dell server to add new SSD drives.

These don't quite fit for converting an SSD to fit into a Dell hotswap tray. I would imagine it would work in some other devices, but these devices put the connector just a little too high to fit into a Dell.
