The StarTech DisplayPort to HDMI adapter lets you connect an HDMI-enabled video display to a DisplayPort video source (e.g.DisplayPort video cards, etc.), eliminating the expense of having to upgrade your display for DisplayPort compatibility. This adapter supports display resolutions of up to 1920x1200 allowing you to take full advantage of HDMI video capability.
The DP2HDMI adapter is a passive adapter cable that requires a DP++ port (DisplayPort++), meaning that DVI and HDMI signals can also be passed through the port.
The DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter is ideal for digital entertainment centers, home offices, business conference rooms and trade show displays. Keep your existing HDMI-enabled monitor to be used with your new DisplayPort device, without needing to buy a new, compatible monitor. Or use the DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter to use your HDMI monitor as a secondary display.
The simple-to-use, small form factor converter makes your DisplayPort device backwards-compatible with your existing HDMI display or projector, with no installation software or drivers required, providing a simple plug-and-play solution. The DP2HDMI adapter is backed by a StarTech Lifetime warranty and free lifetime technical support. (See package insert for warranty and support details.)

I got this cable for my Alienware M15x laptop. I was surprised it'd didn't come with an HDMI and was not familiar with displayport. I got this cable so I could watch my movie files while on vacation. The adapter works great and is very well made. The part that plugs into the data port has a positive locking system which is nice. The quality is also very good and it feels substantial and well put together.
Additional info. For me (as mentioned in the comments below), in order to send the audio through the HDMI cable, you will need to get into the "sound and Audio devices" of the control panel and change the sound playback Default Device to the displayport cable. If you don't the sound will come out the laptop speakers or whatever speakers you have hooked up to the laptop. Just a quick update. I've been using this cable on and off for a while and it still works just fine. More and more hotels have nice TV's with HDMI in plugs so I can play my movies from my laptop which is nice. I just wanted to mention that although the photo of the adapter may look like a USB at first glance IT'S NOT, it IS a DisplayPort male end you are seeing. This is a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, just like the title says. I see too many people giving this item bad reviews because they made the mistake of ordering it thinking it is a USB to HDMI. It isn't. The title and description is correct. I'm not saying I've never ordered the wrong thing by mistake but I can't say I'd blame Amazon for my mistake. Peaty

I was a bit disappoint to see my new Dell laptop come with DP++ (DisplayPort++) output instead of HDMI. I connected the laptop with this adapter to a 6ft HDMI cable directly into my 1080p Phillips flatscreen. Everything comes through perfect with sound. The "locking" design to keep the cable in performs as well as it should. I'm fully satisfied with this adapter because it works.

I purchased this product to add a 37" LG HDTV to my computer setup as a media display screen. The whole purpose of using this adapter in lieu of the fact my video card has a HDMI output is the fact that my video card uses a new technology called Eyefinity. You can run three displays as long as one is a DisplayPort monitor. After doing some thorough searching on AMD's website, I found an article showing adapters one could use to use said third display. Alas, the article was incorrect. While this adapter works flawlessly to use my LG HDTV, it will not activate as a third display. I could only ever run two at any given time. Further (many hours of scouring the web) research showed that Eyefinity can only work with an active adapter. This device is a passive adapter. The difference is power. An active adapter receives power from another source (USB, AC adapter, etc.). This converts the data mid-stream and is powered by the DP bus. To anyone looking at buying this to convert a monitor to use DisplayPort with Eyefinity, stay away.
That being said, it is still a flawless device. I have been using it for a month now with no issues. The real nice thing is allows HD output with 1080i/30Hz interlaced. For some reason, it would not work that way under HDMI alone. I would recommend it for anyone who has an older HDTV who wants to use it as a computer monitor. Just do not expect it to work with Eyefinity. Not a fault of the manufacturer of this device, but of AMD. BTW, I was able to get three displays working. I had to dust off a slightly older video card with a similar chipset as the card I have. My computer is now running two overclocked video cards powering three large displays. I still use this adapter even though it is not required.
