I'm very pleased with this product, it is made with very sturdy and solid materials.

I also found those adapters to be a poor fit to the HDMI cables- they were very tight and a lot of pressure needed to be exerted to insert the cable into the adapter.

If your PC only has an HDMI output, and your monitor a DVI input, this is far superior to those horrible unwieldy adapter kludges that connect to the PC.

If your PC only has an HDMI output, and your monitor a DVI input, this is far superior to those horrible unwieldy adapter kludges that connect to the PC. A DVI cable is usually a heavy, stiff affair and puts an awful strain on the HDMI socket on the PC when there is only a rigid adapter in between. Also, there is often a severe problem with the adapter blocking access to other sockets on the PC which are too close to the HDMI. This product solves both problems very effectively.

In case you can't tell from the description and picture, the small connector fits right into the HDMI socket on the PC, and the DVI-to-DVI cable from the monitor fits right into the large connector on this gadget. If for some reason you have the opposite problem (your monitor only has HDMI and your PC only has DVI), this gadget would work just as well plugged in the opposite direction into the monitor instead of the PC, again using a DVI-to-DVI cable.

All of the DVI-D pins are here. The only thing missing are the DVI-I pins. That's a cross on the side instead of a single line, and in that cross's corners would be analog (VGA) pins. No problem.

For HDMI, it's missing pins 13 and 14, which don't exist on DVI-D. Those would be CEC (remote control signals) and RES (reserved for audio return or 100-mbit ethernet).

Construction is clean and solid. No excess weight. Connectors are smooth.

Previously I bought some lower cost adapters from chinese sellers (and to be fair, I think this StarTech adapter is also made in China) that were a single block connector with DVI on one side and HDMI on the other. For me, a heavy HDMI cable coming out of this type of adapter puts too much strain on the video card connector and would eventually lead to failure. The combination of stiff cable + adapter sticking out of the video card acts like a lever for anything that bumps into it or if the cable is accidentally pulled on. I also found those adapters to be a poor fit to the HDMI cables- they were very tight and a lot of pressure needed to be exerted to insert the cable into the adapter.
By contrast the StarTech adapter with it's short flexible cable puts any strain much closer to the video card and removes the leveraging effect of the other type of adapter. Because it has a short cable, if the HDMI cable plugged into it gets snagged or tugged from the side, it's much more likely to pull free from the adapter, instead of snapping the connector off the video card.
This adapter was more expensive than the first kind I got from a chinese seller, but it's much better built, the connectors fit better, and it's a lot cheaper than replacing a video card because it's connector got snapped off. All things considered, a very good buy.

I've learned to stay away from adaptors priced at either extreme of the price range. The very expensive ones tend to be the same units as the midprice ones but with different labels. The very low end units tend to have low product quality/high failure rate.

I've had good service from Startech products, and this adaptor performs as expected for a reasonable price. You can find ones without any cord length but those tend to block ports near the HDMI port.

The signal from HDMI is the same as DVI-D, so a straight through adaptor is a fine way to connect, say a monitor with DVI-D input and no HDMI to a PC with an HDMI output and no DVI-D.

Does what it's supposed to do: allow me to connect my notebook's HDMI to a DVI computer screen. It supports 2560x1440 resolution when connected to my Dell monitor. It's small and light enough to not take up much room in my notebook bag. The contacts are well made and don't flex or bend when connected to my notebook or the DVI cable for my external monitor. The cabling is thick--I don't expect to have issues with it over time.

A relatively cheap solution for using my external monitor, I have no problems giving this 5 stars.

I like this adapter because it is flexable. I had to install it in a rather tight area and it is nice that it doesn't put a lot of pressure on the socket of my graphics card.
