Product Description

Capacity: USB 3.0

Connect Both IDE And SATA Hard Drives Using Top Slot-Loading Bays Through USB 3.0

The UNIDOCK3U USB 3.0 to SATA/IDE Hard Drive Docking Station delivers instant access to 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch IDE and SATA hard drives through two top loading drive slots - one for Serial ATA drives and one for IDE drives - instead of having to mount the drives into a computer or external enclosure/tray. The slot-loading design holds the SATA and IDE drive(s) upright inside the docks, neatly keeping them off the desk, for convenience and a clutter-free setup. For SATA drives, the HDD can be inserted and connected directly through the designated dock slot, while the IDE drive slot is conveniently positioned near the rear panel 40-pin data and LP4 power connections, making it easy to connect to the dock using the included IDE data and power cables.

Versatile connection options with support for IDE (133Mbps) and USB 3.0 (5Gbps), backward compatible with USB 2.0 host connections (480Mbps)

Large capacity drives (tested with up to 4TB 3.5" and 1TB 2.5" drives) can be used to greatly enhance your computer's storage/backup capabilities.

I ordered this docking station to use my old 2.5 inch SATA hard drive. I also had a requirement to recover my old crashed IDE hard disk. I need to try my hands on that(IDE recovery) to see whether it works!!!

The product arrive on time and was intact. The product includes power cords for US, UK and Europe. I plugged this docking station into my laptop running vista. The product was installed automatically as Vista has built-in drivers for it. I haven't tried this on Linux / Mac. But it should work (as the manufacturer claims that it does).

As soon as I docked my 2.5" SATA hard drive it was recognized and the partitions of hard drive appeared in "My Computer". I haven't bench marked the data transfer speeds but it is decent enough.

The docking station is a bit bulky, so the 4 stars!!! Overall I would recommend this product for anybody who want to use their old hard drives(SATA and IDE both) as spare drives for backup and restore. This can also be used if you are replacing your hard drives on your PC or if you are migrating from IDE to SATA.

The product doesn't include the IDE connectors and LP4 power cords. So 4 stars for that as well!!!

While I haven't had any issues with the product I was a little surprised that you can only connect one IDE and one SATA drive at a time. I thought you could copy from SATA to SATA directly, but you cant. The one slot is not an IDE or SATA, it is IDE only.

Where have you been all of my life

I have been looking for a device like this for a long time... Of course I asked the local computer store about such a device and since they do not carry it, they are like that one does exist.. They are so very wrong. I ordered it and in two days it arrived. Of Course the other stuff I ordered at the same time is still yet to be placed it a box..Amazon Faiiiiil!

Now on to the Device..

This thing works and it works very well...
They shipped everything you need to get the job do plus what looks like power cords for the Major Euro sections. So if you are going to perform some IT work or help your Grand Mother in England back up her stuff they have you covered..

Pros

All of the connectors you need to connect .. IDE and SATA for you Laptop and Desktop Hardrives
It Works Flawlessly
Power Button
It Looks Great
Quality workmanship

Cons
Surprise you cannot place your IDE drives in the Device... What??? Yes the top of the device is only for SATA Hard drives.. But they did give you the connection components need to attach the device.. Power adapter and ribbon.. Sorry I did not expect that! So I place the IDE Hard drive on a Hard Cover Huge Linux book, then placed an Anti Static Hard Drive cover on top of the book and the IDE hard drive on top of that.. The result it works but you desk, floor or table is instantly transformed into a Geek Shop..

This has nothing to do with the Device but BE Very Careful inserting the Power plastic adapter for the Hard Drive! It is a Bear you do not want to damage your devices take your time..

Purchased the StarTech USB 3.0 Docking Station from Amazon inorder to test hard drives and transfer info from one to another. Seems it expanded the things I can do with it. Here is a list of what its being used for now.

1. Plug in a spare hard drive and do a PC backup using the StarTech as an external hard drive
2. With the StarTech you can transfer data from an IDE to a SATA drive
3. As an external drive, you can run diagnostics on a 3.5 or 2.5 Sata/IDE drive from your PC
4. It Utilizes the speed of USB 3.0 for all back and forth data communications

Don't know why I waited so long to purchase it! It has worked out perfectly for these tasks. Received the item quickly as always from Amazon. Highly recommend this product both as a tech accessory and external HD.

I bought this hoping I would be able to rescue data from an external HDD that could no longer be accessed through it's USB connection. Once I opened up the case that the HDD was in, I connected it to the docking station and it instantly installed the drivers and within a minute, I was able to get back my data I thought for sure was long gone.

I was also able to connect two other internal HDD's that I had in an older PC and transfer important data onto my netbook flawlessly. Having both connections types (SATA & PATA) is a major plus, being that both older HDD's were the latter.

Also, being able to connect 2 HDD's to the docking station simultaneously (one of each connection type only) makes transferring and recovering data a breeze.

I would highly recommend this this product to any consumer in the market for a docking station.

The 3 stars is for not indicating, in the bold typed description, that cable adapters are needed for IDE drives. otherwise it works fine. I bought this to have ONE device, on my already busy desk, to check out drives w/o enclosures. For the SATA drives I've tried, it's fine, but IDEs will need additional adapter cables (NOT show in ad photo). My snake pit is already too extensive, so I was disappointed at needing more cables.

To 'dock' IDE drives, be sure to view the smaller images in the ad. Read ALL the "features", because imo, #5 is more a caveat. What it 'explains', is that the nice neat dock shown, has no 'slot' for IDE drives.

I kept it as I only have 2 IDEs, seldom used, so their cables don't have to be dragged out that often. Otherwise, I'd have paid more for a dock that accepts both types.

Short version- A nice neat desktop vehicle for checking SATA drives, but the 'IDE' capacity of this new car . . . . turns out to be a trailer hitch.
