This is going to sound very underwhelming to those familiar with it, but I upgraded to this device from a Hauppage WinTV USB2 from around 2005. The previous device, while it didn't have noticeable input lag, only output at 30 frames per second, the software crashed a lot, recording was unreliable at best, and had terrible interlacing over everything.

By comparison, StarTech's device (apparently a rebranded Micomsoft? It seems to work with the Micomsoft drivers) has quite a lot of improvement. Support for high-resolution progressive scan modes, a variety of inputs for many things (component, HDMI, and DVI), and I can play fast-paced games like Mortal Kombat on my PS3 without it even batting an eye. StarTech's included StreamCatcher software has a couple of frustrating "features" (like the status bars that constantly pop into view when the mouse so much as jitters), but I've personally used it to record many videos, take many screenshots, and show my friends via Livestream Procaster.

The software is easily replaceable by something more powerful, like the popular AmaRecTV. The device itself seems almost flawless.

I feel it worth noting that this device is NOT HDCP-certified, which means that devices like certain Blu-Ray players and the Playstation 3 will not output on this device via HDMI. Spend the extra cash on a component video cable; if you're anything like me, you won't even notice the difference.

I got this card to assist me in streaming HD video and audio over the web. I tried it with Live Stream and experienced an audio echo, so was unable to utilize it for that purpose (it's possible that it works fine with other streaming applications such as WebEx, but I don't know as I never tested any other apps). The video quality was very good, but unfortunately I was unable to get Live Stream to play nice with my HMC150's 1080 or 720p output's via HDMI (said camera was busy). It's most likely due to limited system resources, but may simply not be possible between these two specific devices. I was forced to use 480p and everything streamed nicely (except the echo audio). The software that comes with the card, however, showed the video with proper audio (no echo). I changed the recording formats on my HMC150 on the fly (with software running) and it was quick to recognize the change. I also tested the recording/capture feature. The container options are MP4 or AVI with h.264 encoding (real-time). The recording looked good for a realtime h.264 encode, but I prefer results I get on my Mac with Compressor or Handbrake (although not realtime - in fact, far from it). The fact that this card encodes h.264 on-the-fly is a big hidden feature. I'm assuming you could capture live and upload directly to youtube, which could be a big plus for some. I also VJ live and testing this card with Resolume Avenue, and it was easily recognized with a nice high frame rate. I'm running Windows 7 Professional on a Centrino Pro 2 Duo with 256MB RAM (Lenovo ThinkPad), pretty old machine by today's standards! So, the drivers seem to play nice with other softwares (did not test editing applications, but I assume it would work). Overall, I am happy with my purchase.Read more ›

After the negitive comment from someone I decided to take a chance on this product anyway. So glad I did! It works perfect for viewing and recording from my Sony A65 hdmi output. I can now see live camera view in Full Screen on my older Dell inspiron 1525. I can setup a photo with the Sony A65's with the camera hdmi output and see it on my laptops much larger screen. Final product view before and after the shot is awesome! Video mode in extreme high res is also no problem... It can also record the entire real Estate photo shoot's stills and video with out having to switch back and forth. Best $149.00 investment for your camera to laptop interface availible anywhere! I highly recomend this product!

I too decided to try this card despite the initial negative review based simply on the low-cost. It works wonderfully. I take off one star for the two caveats I've encountered.

First of all, the card is extremely touchy to insertion/ejection - this means for it to function properly at all (at least based on all my test systems) it must be inserted into the ExpressCard slot BEFORE the PC is powered on for detection to work properly. If you accidentally or otherwise eject the card, you will need to reboot the machine.

Secondly, the HDMI input signal that the card receives must, MUST be non-encrypted or the device will block the signal. (You will see an annoying little "HDCP" image in the place of where your capture image should be.) Oh well... for camcorders this is not a problem at all, but you'll have mixed success with HDMI outputs from PCs, Macs and other devices like DVD or BluRay players.

Other than those two considerations, the card is inexpensive and gorgeous in it's quality. We use this for live streaming and recording and the results have been fantastic. A/V sync is spot on and the picture is phenomenal. Driver and software setup is very minimal as well.

**EDIT: For those interested in using this card for streaming purposes, it works great with Adobe Flash Live Media Encoder. If all you need is a single camera shot from an HDMI output then it's a really nice looking and cheap solution. Just be wary of the issues I mention above.
