I tested the 3 main brands of these that Amazon stocks in my MACBOOK PRO, I did not test windows functionality. There is a clear winner of the 3 and that is the StarTech one. Why: the ONLY one of these that includes a full-sized driver CD in the box. They should know these will be used in laptops and you CANNOT put an 8cm CD in a slot-loading CD drive! Mac drivers, tight slot connection, and having the smallest cable connection module were the winning points for me.

Pro/Cons...
StarTech Pros: smallest point of cable connection module, full-size driver CD, best "retention" strength in the slot, lifetime warranty, great support website, readily available MAC & Win drivers for the Realtek 81xx chip, didn't get warm at all.
StarTech Cons: it is the most $$$ out of the 3, but still only 35 bucks.
StarTech.com 1 Port ExpressCard Gigabit Laptop Ethernet NIC Network Adapter Card (EC1000S)

I/O Crest Pros: cheapest of the 3, middle-sized point of cable connection module.
I/O Crest Cons: worst support website, NO MAC DRIVER for this Agere ET-131x chip, weak slot "retention", only 8cm driver CD, gets pretty warm, only 1 year warranty.
I/O Crest Gigabit Ethernet 34mm ExpressCard SY-EXP24006

Syba Pros: doesn't get very warm, readily available drivers for the Realtek 81xx chip
Syba Cons: 1 year warranty, only 8cm driver CD, weakest slot "retention", very LARGE-blocky point of cable connection module: it sticks WAY out & way UP makes it easy to bump & it slips out killing connection.

I set this up on an older computer (~2005) with Windows XP 32-bit professional. The computer did not initially have drivers for it (no surprise). So after the automatic driver search did not work (which I figured it would not) I just put the included cd in and from Windows device manager right-click-selected the ethernet card and pressed "update driver". I told it to search the cd-rom drive. It took about 30-40 seconds and then came up with 4 possible options. 2 were for windows 2003 or something, and 2 were for xp. I could not tell the difference between the two for win XP. They might have been the same exact driver but in different locations on the disk or something. In any case, one of the ones for XP was already selected, so I just went with that one. I pressed OK and badabing badaboom. It worked. Although not necessary, I went ahead and configured a static ip for the card on my local network and now everything is working just like it did before my previous network card went on the fritz.

I have only been using it 1 day so far and it works fine. If it breaks sometime in the near future, I'll update this review.

Took out a 10/100 out of a five year old Dell Inspirion 4700 and replaced with this router. A very noticeable difference right away. Simple to install and works great!!

I have just received and installed this StarTech PCI gigabit card yesterday. It matched what's on the box and in the picture here (unlike a reviewer's bad experience). I have ordered two other cards from different manufacturers, and this card works better than most other cards for the same price or lower on my Dell desktop running Vista 32-bit. I would like to point out one difference between the installation of a gigabit card and a wireless USB card in that for the gigabit card the procedure is to install the card first, let the system find the new hardware, then put the CD that came with the package in and guide the system to find the new driver on the CD. The USB wireless adapter most likely needs to have the driver properly installed prior to inserting the card unless you are running Windows 7. A lot of times, the CD is full of different drivers, utilities and tools to meet the needs of different systems and users. Therefore it's a good practice to look at the chipset on the gigabit card that you are installing before inserting, so that you know where to look for it when prompted. In this particular case you need to know it's a Realtek PCI 8169SC. It will be useful when you try to upgrade your driver later.

In case your system can't find the new hardware (this happens a lot if you try to use an open slot that's been idle for years), don't worry. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust accumulated in the slot, insert the card, remove it and insert it back. Repeat if necessary until you get it recognized. Replacing an existing card is less likely to have this problem.

I bought this to upgrade an old computer from 100Mbps to GigE from computer to the home router so I can get better performance when dealing with files from the home NAS. The card worked fine - plugged it in, Win7 32bit detected it just fine and didn't require the driver CD, and I was off in under a few minutes. It was cool that the card came with a low profile bracket as well to fit in smaller cases.

For performance, you definitely see the difference. However, my NAS is slow at GigE, but I'm able to rule out my desktop as the slow culprit.
